Job summary

University of Fort Hare in Strand is seeking an experienced Accountant / Accounts Manager to lead the accounting function and supervise a small finance team.

The ideal candidate is SAIPA qualified or has completed SAIPA articles, with strong IFRS for SMEs, VAT and corporate tax knowledge, and monthly management accounts experience. You will oversee budgets, reconciliations, group reporting, inventory controls and liaise with directors to explain financial information.

Qualifications

• SAIPA qualified or completed SAIPA articles.
• IFRS for SMEs knowledge.
• VAT and company tax knowledge.
• Experience preparing and analysing monthly management accounts.
• Budgets, forecasts and projections experience.
• Ability to complete reconciliations on all trial balance accounts.
• Experience supervising accounting team members and ensuring reporting deadlines are met.
• Proficiency in accounting software such as Xero, QuickBooks, Sage or similar.
• Strong Microsoft 365 and Excel skills.
• Experience working across multiple group entities and preparing group management reports.
• Knowledge of inventory and stock controls, including forex adjustments.
• Knowledge of imports, exports, customs and the related accounting and VAT treatment.
• Strong attention to detail, numeracy and professional judgement.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain financial information clearly to directors.

Responsibilities

• Take responsibility for the accounting function and oversee a small finance team.
• This position will suit a hands-on, organised Accountant who can work independently, manage multiple priorities and take ownership of the accounting function.
