Job summary

QBE Insurance in Amsterdam seeks an Underwriting Manager to lead Dutch underwriting strategy, drive portfolio performance, and align with product and distribution teams. This senior role is part of the Dutch Management Team and reports to the Country General Manager with matrix to UW leadership.

You will partner with Product and European leadership to deliver plans, provide portfolio insights, and ensure data integrity. Strong leadership and multi-line underwriting experience are essential.

Qualifications

  • Commercially driven with a strong focus on market dynamics and supporting sales and product development.
  • High attention to data integrity, ensuring accuracy and reliability of underwriting and portfolio data.
  • Analytical skills, with the ability to interpret data and translate insights into business decisions.
  • Strategic mindset, capable of defining and executing underwriting and portfolio strategies.
  • Proven leadership experience with the ability to develop high-performing teams.
  • Proven experience in Underwriting and portfolio management across multiple lines of business.

Responsibilities

  • Define and execute country underwriting strategies aligned with business objectives, product strategy, and regulatory requirements.
  • Partner with Product and European leadership to deliver the business plan and support strategic decision-making.
  • Provide portfolio insights and ensure alignment across underwriting, pricing, and product development.
  • Oversee portfolio performance with strong monitoring, reporting, and profitability optimization.
  • Ensure underwriting discipline, risk control and compliance with internal and regulatory standards.
  • Drive data integrity, portfolio reviews, and continuous improvement through innovation and automation.
  • Build relationships with brokers, clients, and stakeholders to support growth.
  • Collaborate with Distribution and Product teams to align underwriting with market needs.
  • Lead, coach and develop a high-performing underwriting team; foster a collaborative culture.
  • Set objectives, drive engagement and support professional growth.

The Opportunity

This role requires strong leadership in team management, collaboration with cross-functional teams, and strategic mindset to ensure underwriting decisions align with overall QBE strategy. The underwriting manager works closely with the Product team and Distribution teams to drive business performance while ensuring continuous development of the underwriting teams and is part of the Dutch Management Team to support day to day decision making.

We have been growing rapidly since and have significant ambitions for the coming years. To support the rapid profitable growth within the Amsterdam office, we are looking for a Dutch speaking Country Underwriting Manager.

Reporting to the Country General Manager with a matrix to Director of UW and Portfolio Management Europe, you will work closely with the Product team and Distribution teams to drive business performance while ensuring continuous development of the underwriting teams.

Your New Role
Strategic Leadership & Planning
  • Define and execute country underwriting strategies aligned with business objectives, product strategy, and regulatory requirements
  • Partner with Product and European leadership to deliver the business plan and support strategic decision-making
  • Provide portfolio insights and ensure alignment across underwriting, pricing, and product development
Portfolio & Underwriting Management
  • Oversee portfolio performance, ensuring strong monitoring, reporting, and profitability optimisation
  • Ensure underwriting discipline, risk control, and compliance with internal and regulatory standards
  • Drive data integrity, portfolio reviews, and continuous improvement through innovation and automation
Customer & Market Engagement
  • Build strong relationships with brokers, clients, and key stakeholders to support business growth
  • Collaborate with Distribution and Product teams to align underwriting practices with market needs
  • Integrate market feedback into underwriting and product strategies
Team Leadership & Development
  • Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing underwriting team
  • Foster a collaborative, performance-driven culture aligned with business goals
  • Set clear objectives, drive engagement, and support professional growth
