Job summary

Channable is seeking a Team Lead for the Infra Platform Group in Utrecht. You will split time between leadership and hands-on development, mentoring engineers and shaping the roadmap while contributing to architecture and service delivery using Haskell, Rust, and Python.

You will manage a team of four engineers, collaborate with other teams and stakeholders, and drive engineering excellence with a pragmatic, growth-oriented mindset.

Qualifications

• Experience leading an engineering team or strong leadership potential and mentoring能力.
• Strong backend development background with Haskell and familiarity with Rust and Python.
• Deep knowledge of relational databases, ideally PostgreSQL, plus Linux and Git.
• Experience with web development, APIs, and writing clean, well-documented code.
• Excellent communication, problem-solving and collaboration skills, with stakeholder empathy.

Responsibilities

• Organize work, manage priorities, and contribute to long-term Infra Platform roadmap.
• Mentor team members, conduct performance reviews, and grow hard/soft skills.
• Hire new team members and set up project teams and processes.
• Design, develop and test features, improve reliability and performance of services.
• Review peers' PRs, break down large projects into smaller tasks, and guide teams.

About the role

We are looking for a new team lead for one of the teams within our Infra Platform Group. Your mission in this role is to architect and deliver foundational services that empower the product engineering teams building our e-commerce platform. Together with your team, you will tackle challenging engineering problems, work on high-performing and scalable services written in Haskell and Rust, and provide a high-quality developer experience for the teams that use them via Python.

Your time will be split approximately 50-50 between leadership tasks and hands-on development. In your leadership role, you are a mentor to your team members, unblocking them when they face challenging roadblocks, and you help them grow both their hard and soft skills. As part of your hands-on work, you are contributing to the architecture and the ongoing development and maintenance of our services.

You will initially be managing a team of four experienced Haskell and Rust engineers, and you will be working closely together with the other teams in the group, the engineering manager of the Infra Platform Group, and the stakeholders from other engineering teams that consume our services.

Your responsibilities

Your Team Lead tasks will include:

• Organizing the work and managing priorities
• Collaborating with the other team leads in the Infra Platform Group on the long-term roadmap
• Mentoring team members, helping them grow and conducting half-yearly performance reviews
• Setting up project teams and mentoring project leads
• Hiring new team members
• Implementing and improving processes for the team
• Establishing the team culture and fostering a collaborative environment

Your Development tasks will include:

• Designing, developing and testing new features in our services
• Improving the reliability and robustness of our application
• Working on scalability and performance improvements
• Collaborating with and reviewing PRs of other engineers
• Breaking down big projects into smaller issues
• Writing clear and actionable issues
• Debugging and fixing issues, and teaching team members to do the same
• Working with our product engineering teams and DevOps team on requirements and issues

Who are you?

You like working in a dynamic team of skilled engineers, discussing technical decisions openly and collaboratively. It is easy for you to break down big issues into smaller tasks and to prioritize work pragmatically.

To set you up for success in this role, you will benefit from having the following skills and experience:

• You have previous experience leading an engineering team, or you are an experienced engineer excited to start your career as a leader.
• You can give detailed code reviews both from a high-level and a low-level perspective.
• You have the technical depth to help your team members grow and remove roadblocks for them.
• You have substantial backend development experience and are skilled with Haskell, and ideally comfortable with Rust and Python.
• You are familiar with relational databases (ideally PostgreSQL), Linux and Git.
• You have experience with web development, web technologies, and APIs.
• You have strong communication and problem-solving skills.
• You are a people-oriented individual who helps others with an open and approachable attitude.
• You value high software engineering standards.
• You are pragmatic and empathic towards your team members and other stakeholders.
• You like helping the team focus on the most important tasks and align priorities with the rest of the company (the OKR framework is used).

Practical requirements:

• EU citizenship or a valid work permit for the Netherlands; preferably living in the Netherlands
• Available for at least 32 hours a week, with two days spent at the Utrecht office
