Job summary

Nearfield Instruments is seeking a System Architect to take technical ownership of critical subsystems within our precision metrology machines. You will bridge system-level requirements and detailed engineering, shaping architectures across mechatronics, mechanics, electronics, software and control.

In this role you will lead subsystem development from concept to volume production, make architectural decisions, guide engineers, and ensure on-time delivery while maintaining high performance,

Qualifications

  • MSc or PhD in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering or related field.
  • Around 7 years of relevant industrial experience in multidisciplinary high-tech product development.
  • Proven ability to translate performance requirements into subsystem architectures.
  • Experience with multi-disciplinary development projects from concept to release.
  • Strong communication skills to explain complex problems clearly to different stakeholders and guide teams effectively.
  • Leadership qualities with the ability to take ownership, make decisions and coach others.
  • A good command of English, both spoken and written.

Responsibilities

  • Translating system-level requirements into subsystem concepts, functional architecture and engineering specifications.
  • Taking technical ownership of subsystem development projects and aligning all disciplines and stakeholders.
  • Making architectural decisions on sensing, actuation, motion design, control strategy and integration approach.
  • Shaping the subsystem roadmap in line with company and customer needs
  • Leading trade-offs between performance, cost, manufacturability, reliability and serviceability.
  • Providing context and guidance to engineers and reviewing designs, simulations and integration plans.
  • Supporting industrialisation, validation and release into manufacturing and field use.
  • Collaborating with system architects, project managers and lead engineers to ensure technical excellence and on-time delivery.
