Job summary

Jumbo seeks a Structural Engineer to join Shipping, Offshore and New Building teams. You will analyze structural cases for the fleet and design modifications such as load-spreading devices.

You will perform hand calculations and FEM analyses, mentor juniors, and ensure compliance with DNV/LR/ABS codes. The role is office-based with occasional port visits in Schiedam.

Qualifications

  • B.sc/M.sc degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Offshore Engineering or Naval Architecture
  • 10 years of work experience in structural steel design and Heavy Lift projects
  • Ability to work in a team and across multiple projects in a dynamic work environment
  • Familiar with codes and standards like DNV, LR, ABS, AISC, AWS, ASME, Eurocode
  • English fluency in speaking and writing
  • Experience with Ansys Workbench is required; RFEM knowledge is beneficial

Responsibilities

  • Analyze project needs and prepare the detailed scope of work and planning for all tasks
  • Prepare and check design calculations (reports) for all structural design work
  • Perform hand calculations and FEM analyses for structures
  • Guide and mentor junior engineers and project engineers
  • Coordinate outsourced structural design and fabrication scopes
  • Ensure quality and integrity of structural designs and on-site installations
  • Support deck strength verification, grillage design, sea-fastening, and vessel structures

Jumbo’s Offshore Department deals with transport and installation solutions for our 2 DP vessels with lifting capacities up to 900 mt and a water depth reach of 3000 m operating worldwide. Beside the Offshore team we have a shipping department where we operate with 8 vessels and 31 vessels together with our joint venture partner SAL under the Jumbo SAL Alliance.

Jumbo’s Engineering department is involved in projects from the preparation phase until execution of the project. To strengthen the Engineering Department Jumbo seeks a:

1 FTE - 37.5 hours

As a Structural Engineer, you will be working for the Shipping, Offshore as well as the New Building department. Within a project team, you are responsible for analyzing structural cases for the Jumbo fleet and designing solutions such as structural modifications in the ship’s structure, load spreading devices, etcetera.

  • Analyze the project needs and prepare the detailed scope of work and planning for all relevant tasks;
  • Prepare and check the design calculations (and reports) for all structural design work;
  • Perform detailed calculations by using hand calculations and FEM analysis;
  • Train/mentor Junior Engineers and Project Engineers and share your knowledge;
  • Actively initiate, set up and improve the departmental procedures, tools and standards;
  • Review, supervise and coordinate outsourced structural design and fabrication scopes;
  • Be accountable for the quality of your work concerning the structural design and integrity assessment;
  • Be involved with the fabrication and installation of the structures;
  • Also actively participate in project scopes, such as: Deck strength verification, design of grillages, bumpers, temporary or permanent vessel structures as well as sea-fastening designs and operational procedures;
  • Have an office-based position and occasionally on board or in port vessel support;
  • Support the two major departments within Jumbo - Shipping and Offshore, including heavy transport, oil and gas as well as offshore renewable projects.
Requirements
  • B.sc/M.sc degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Offshore Engineering or Naval Architecture;
  • 10 years of work experience in structural steel design and Heavy Lift projects;
  • Ability to work in a team and across multiple projects in a dynamic work environment;
  • Able to perform hand calculations for simple structures;
  • Experience with Ansys Workbench is required, Rfem knowledge is beneficial;
  • Familiar with common CAD software, setting up basic drawings and sketches;
  • Solid knowledge of rules and regulations within the codes and standards of DNV, LR, ABS, etcetera and bring basic knowledge of codes such as AISC, AWS, ASME and Eurocode;
  • Basic knowledge of the Shipping and Offshore industry, particularly Heavy Lift;
  • You are able to guide a draughtman to set-up fabrication drawings;
  • Fully conversant in English (verbally and in writing);
  • Knowledge of programming languages Mathcad and Python.
