Job summary

Stream is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to own the technical direction of Stream Video's media plane and its infrastructure. This full-time hybrid role requires three days per week in the Amsterdam office, or remote from anywhere in the EU.

You will set the architecture, scale the livestreaming stack, and own the multi-cloud fleet with a focus on reliability and cost efficiency. You’ll partner with Video SDK teams and infrastructure, mentor senior engineers, and drive design reviews,

Qualifications

• Extensive backend engineering experience owning architecture for high-scale systems.
• Proficiency in Go (or equivalent like Rust, C++, Java) and real-time media.
• Track record with latency-sensitive, stateful services at large scale.
• Deep knowledge of distributed systems, networking, and cost-aware placement.
• Experience with real-time media (WebRTC, SFU/MCU concepts, RTP/RTCP, etc.).
• Strong documentation skills and ability to write design docs and RFCs.
• Experience with AI tooling and safe production use is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Architecture: define the backend and media infra roadmap for Stream Video.
• Scale livestreaming: design the SFU/ pipelines and move from WebRTC to CDN-backed HLS.
• Own the fleet: ensure reliability, autoscaling, placement, and cost control across clouds.
• Gate production changes: define validation for changes including AI-generated ones.
• Incident leadership: resolve critical latency/quality incidents with customers.
• Mentor engineers: guide senior team members through reviews and hiring.
