Job summary

European Space Agency (ESA) in Noordwijk, Netherlands, offers an internship in the Systems Department within the Navigation Systems Implementation and Validation Section. You will contribute to end-to-end studies of distributed in-space processing architectures, and assist in designing a Hardware-in-the-Loop compute node for NAVLAB.

The role provides hands-on experience in distributed computing, navigation and EO processing, plus AI/ML applications for space.

Qualifications

• University student, preferably in final or second-to-last year of Master’s program.
• Must prove enrollment for the entire duration of the internship.
• Good knowledge of Python and data analysis tools.
• Familiarity with satellite systems and space communications.
• Familiarity with cloud computing, data centre architectures or distributed computing.
• Basic understanding of AI and high-performance computing concepts.

Responsibilities

• Perform end-to-end system study and identify distributed in-space processing architectures.
• Assess architectural trades: centralised vs distributed processing and edge computing.
• Define representative use cases relevant to ESA activities.
• Design and prepare a Hardware-in-the-Loop compute node for NAVLAB.
• Gain practical experience in distributed computing, navigation and Earth Observation processing, and AI/ML in space.
