Job summary

FSO Instruments in Delft is seeking a medior Embedded Software Engineer to contribute to space laser communication technology. You will develop robust embedded C/C++ firmware for microcontrollers, FPGAs, and SoCs that control optical subsystems.

You’ll work on real‑time control loops, hardware bring‑up, and diagnostics, with interfaces such as SPI, I2C, UART, and SpaceWire, in a collaborative, fast‑paced environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• 5+ years of experience as Embedded Software Engineer or a similar role, preferably in communication tech or space systems.
• Strong knowledge of embedded software, real-time operating systems, and low-level programming.
• Proficiency in C and C++.
• Familiarity with UART, SPI, I2C; experience with microcontrollers, FPGAs, SoCs; hardware/software co-design.
• Knowledge of laser communication principles would be advantageous.
• Excellent problem-solving and teamwork in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Firmware Development — Develop embedded C/C++ firmware for MCUs, FPGAs, or SoCs that control optical subsystems.
• Real‑Time Control Systems — Create deterministic control loops for actuators and optical components.
• Hardware Integration — Bring‑up of boards, debugging interfaces (SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, SpaceWire).
• Optical Payload Support — Implement drivers for lasers, detectors, ADC/DAC, and alignment sensors.
• System Diagnostics — Develop telemetry, logging, fault detection, and recovery mechanisms.
• Testing & Verification — Write unit tests, enable environmental tests.
