Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Unity VR Engineer based in Netherlands.

Join an innovative technology environment focused on building advanced training platforms and immersive virtual reality experiences that transform how people learn. As a Senior Unity VR Engineer, you will play a key role in designing and developing the client-side infrastructure powering next-generation VR training simulations. Rather than building isolated applications, you will create scalable, reusable systems that support multiple simulations and future client platforms. You will collaborate closely with backend engineers to implement reliable client-server communication and ensure accurate, consistent simulation behavior across devices. The role combines hands‑on engineering, architectural ownership, performance optimization, and developer tooling within a fast-moving startup environment. You will also explore AI-assisted development workflows, helping establish the tools and validation processes needed to improve engineering efficiency and code quality. This is an opportunity to shape a product from the ground up, influence technical direction, and contribute to technology that makes learning more engaging and effective.

Accountabilities
  • Unity client architecture: Design, build, and maintain core components of the Unity VR client architecture, creating reusable infrastructure that supports multiple training simulations and future client platforms rather than one‑off applications.
  • Client‑server integration: Implement client-side systems that communicate with backend services according to established architectural specifications, accurately reflecting server‑authoritative simulation state and behavior on the device.
  • API and contract collaboration: Work closely with backend engineers to co-design client‑server APIs, define data contracts, and ensure reliable communication between the client and server components.
  • Reusable frameworks and infrastructure: Develop scalable frameworks, shared components, and architectural patterns that enable efficient development, maintenance, and expansion of the training platform.
  • VR application development: Build and evolve immersive training experiences for Android‑based VR devices, ensuring stable functionality, responsive interactions, and consistent behavior across supported hardware.
  • Performance optimization: Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, optimize resource usage, and improve runtime reliability to deliver smooth and effective VR experiences.
  • Developer and content creation tools: Create and maintain tools that help content creators and other developers build, configure, test, and extend training simulations efficiently.
  • AI-assisted engineering workflows: Integrate AI coding assistants into everyday development practices and establish pipelines, automated checks, and validation processes that make AI‑generated code reliable and maintainable.
  • Technical decision-making: Make pragmatic architectural choices, balance technical priorities, and address complex engineering challenges in a dynamic environment where requirements and product needs may evolve.
  • Cross‑functional collaboration: Communicate technical decisions clearly, collaborate with distributed team members, and contribute to the continuous improvement of engineering practices and platform architecture.
Requirements
  • Professional Unity and C# experience: Ideally 5 or more years of professional experience developing software with Unity and C#, with a proven track record of delivering complex applications or products.
  • Large‑scale application architecture: Demonstrated experience designing, architecting, and refactoring substantial Unity projects, supported by a portfolio or examples of relevant work.
  • Android VR development: Recent experience developing VR applications for Android‑based devices within the past five years. Familiarity with Meta Quest hardware and its development ecosystem is strongly preferred.
  • Reusable infrastructure development: Proven ability to build generic frameworks, shared systems, and reusable client‑side infrastructure rather than focusing exclusively on individual features or standalone applications.
  • Client‑server architecture: Comfort working within a defined client‑server architecture, implementing established API contracts, and integrating client applications with backend services that maintain authoritative simulation state and logic.
  • Software engineering fundamentals: Strong architectural judgment, debugging skills, and the ability to build maintainable, reliable systems with attention to performance and long‑term scalability.
  • Developer tooling and automation: Experience developing tools, workflows, or validation systems that improve engineering productivity and software quality. Familiarity with AI coding assistants and automated validation practices is valuable.
  • Adaptability and ownership: A proactive, independent approach to problem‑solving, with the ability to manage technical priorities and make sound decisions in an early‑stage startup environment.
  • Communication and teamwork: Excellent English communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues in a remote, multicultural team.
  • Interest in learning technology: Genuine enthusiasm for using software and immersive technologies to improve training, education, and learning experiences.
Nice to have
  • Experience developing for additional client platforms, particularly WebGL.
  • Familiarity with data‑driven or reactive component systems.
  • Experience building extensible technical platforms that support multiple applications, workflows, or deployment targets.
  • An interest in AI‑assisted software development and improving engineering workflows through automation.
Benefits
  • Fully remote work: Work remotely from Europe.
  • Flexible working hours: Organize your schedule around team collaboration and delivery priorities without being tied to US working hours.
  • High ownership and autonomy: Take direct responsibility for important architectural decisions, technical implementation, and product development.
  • Platform-building opportunity: Help establish the technical foundations of a growing training platform, with the opportunity to influence its evolution from the ground up.
  • Product and architectural influence: Contribute meaningfully to product direction, software architecture, and the overall user experience.
  • Innovative technical environment: Work with Unity, immersive VR technologies, client‑server systems, reusable infrastructure, and AI‑assisted development practices.
  • Professional growth: Develop your expertise while tackling complex engineering challenges and helping establish scalable development processes.
  • Meaningful impact: Contribute to technology designed to improve learning and training through interactive, immersive experiences.
  • Collaborative remote culture: Work with an internationally distributed team in an environment that values communication, initiative, and technical excellence.
  • Opportunity to support product growth: Help build and evolve the platform's core technology as it expands its capabilities and commercial reach.
