Job summary

Hamilton Barnes Associates Limited is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to shape the mechanical strategy behind hyperscale AI data centers across Europe. You’ll own HVAC systems, cooling architecture and mechanical standards while collaborating with engineering, construction and operations teams to support global infrastructure growth.

Qualifications

  • Strong mechanical engineering background within hyperscale or large scale data center environments.
  • Extensive experience designing and reviewing HVAC and critical cooling systems.
  • Experience assessing the technical feasibility of new sites or supporting early stage infrastructure developments.
  • Strong understanding of high density cooling technologies and mechanical infrastructure for AI and HPC workloads.
  • Experience supporting projects through design, construction and commissioning.
  • Confident reviewing and challenging consultant and vendor designs.
  • Comfortable travelling regularly across Europe with occasional wider international travel.
  • Strong communication skills with experience working across engineering, acquisitions and executive stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical and HVAC design across new hyperscale data center builds and major campus expansions
  • Travel regularly across EMEA and internationally with the Site Acquisition and Technical Due Diligence teams to assess prospective data center sites
  • Evaluate mechanical infrastructure and cooling capability, identifying technical risks, constraints and site feasibility before acquisition
  • Validate and verify mechanical designs throughout the design and construction lifecycle
  • Define and standardise mechanical and cooling design principles across multiple regions
  • Own mechanical and HVAC documentation for construction and operational handover
  • Work closely with consultants, contractors and vendors to ensure designs meet performance, efficiency and resilience requirements
  • Support commissioning, integrated systems testing and transition into live operations
  • Review and approve mechanical design submissions and as-built documentation
  • Drive continuous improvement and innovation across global mechanical design standards

This opportunity is ideal for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer looking to shape the mechanical strategy behind hyperscale AI data centers. You'll work across site evaluation, technical due diligence, design, construction, commissioning, and operations, taking ownership of HVAC systems, cooling architecture, and mechanical standards while collaborating with engineering, construction, and operations teams to support global infrastructure growth.
