Job summary

Elsevier in Amsterdam seeks a seasoned Backend Software Engineer to design, develop, test, and operate scalable Java-based services and APIs within a cross-functional squad.

You will contribute to production stability, participate in Agile ceremonies, and collaborate with Product Managers, Architects, QE, SRE, and other squads to deliver reliable software. Strong ownership and problem-solving are essential.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of backend experience building production systems.
• Strong Java and Spring Framework experience.
• Experience with Agile development and cross‑functional collaboration.
• BS/MS in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent.
• Proficiency in SQL queries and relational databases.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain backend services and APIs.
• Participate in Agile ceremonies and collaborate with cross‑functional teams.
• Deliver high‑quality software within deadlines.
• Troubleshoot production issues with ownership and urgency.
• Contribute to code reviews and engineering standards.
• Improve reliability, performance, and security of systems.
• Document designs and operational procedures when needed.
