Job summary

Meridia is seeking a Senior Geospatial Data Scientist consultant to advance first-mile intelligence — production area assessment, sourcing area analysis, and geospatial model development. You will integrate satellite, field and statistical data to support risk assessments and traceability within sustainable agriculture frameworks.

The role is remote, part-time with a Netherlands focus, engaging with the Management Team, Methodology and R&D.

Qualifications

• Advanced degree (MSc or PhD) in Remote Sensing, Geospatial Science, Computer Science, or related field.
• 10+ years of practical experience applying statistical and earth observation techniques to agriculture.
• Proficiency in geospatial programming languages (Python, R) and Earth Observation tools (e.g. GEE).
• Knowledge of agricultural systems and supply chains in tropical and subtropical regions.
• Experience with modelling approaches for supply chain analysis (optimisation, spatial allocation, entity matching, network analysis).
• Strong geospatial data engineering skills (PostGIS, GDAL/geopandas) and handling large raster/vector datasets.
• Experience building reproducible, version-controlled analytical pipelines (Git; Docker a plus).
• Ability to document methodologies rigorously, including data provenance, assumptions, limitations and licensing.
• Ability to work independently in a remote setting with strong communication in English.

Responsibilities

• Develop accurate, high-quality models and datasets for production area assessment and sourcing-area analysis across commodities and origin countries.
• Leverage in-situ farm plot datasets to train and validate models.
• Adapt existing ML models to local agricultural contexts to improve prediction accuracy.
• Create scalable, reproducible methodologies that work across geographies and commodities.
