Job summary

Albert Heijn seeks a Senior Data Engineer to lead data pipeline design and delivery in a modern Azure-based data landscape. You will build scalable data platforms, mentor engineers across squads, and collaborate with product owners to align technical direction with business goals.

You will drive data quality, observability, and platform reliability while applying DevOps practices and modern data architectures to power decision making and customer experiences. Hybrid work is available.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or a related field.
• 5+ years of data engineering experience with the listed tech stack.
• Hands-on with Azure data services: Data Factory, Data Lake, Event Hubs.
• Proficient in Databricks, Spark, Delta Lake, Python (PySpark) and SQL.
• Experience with CI/CD (Git, GitHub Actions) and Terraform.
• Strong data modeling (dimensional modeling, star schemas).
• Monitoring/observability with Azure Monitor, Prometheus, Grafana.
• Orchestration of pipelines with Azure Data Factory.
• Testing, data validation, and schema enforcement.
• Experience with real-time and batch processing.
• Knowledge of data governance, privacy, and compliance.

The Retail Business Platform team at Albert Heijn is looking for a skilledSenior Data Engineerto lead the technical execution of data engineering initiatives in a modern, cutting‑edge technology landscape (Azure, Microservices, Databricks).

You’ll play a key role in a complex domain that supports critical applications relying on robust and scalable dataflows across the organization. This is a hands‑on leadership role where you’ll drive the design and implementation of data pipelines, improve platform reliability, and mentor engineers across squads. Your work will directly impact how Albert Heijn leverages data to reinvent food retail in the Netherlands.

As a Senior Data Engineer in the Retail Business Platform, you’ll be at the heart of this transformation - designing, building, and optimizing scalable data solutions that power our decision‑making and customer experiences. You’ll work closely with engineering manager, architect, and product owner to shape the technical direction of our data framework and lead by example in execution.

Key responsibilities of your role.

Technical Leadership & Execution:

• Design, develop, and maintain robust data pipelines and scalable data marts using Azure and Databricks
• Implement data quality frameworks, monitoring systems, and automated validation processes
• Optimize data workflows for performance, reliability, and fault tolerance
• Apply DevOps practices including CI/CD, version control, and infrastructure automation

Platform Optimization & Innovation:

• Contribute to architectural decisions and platform evolution to support growing business needs
• Evaluate and integrate new technologies to improve data processing and analytics capabilities
• Ensure platform scalability and resilience through proactive performance tuning and incident resolution

Collaboration & Mentorship:

• Collaborate with product owners, analysts, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions
• Mentor junior and medior engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning
• Act as a technical lead in projects, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and engineering best practices
