Job description

How you can make a difference

Are you ready to lead the future of data management engineering at Albert Heijn? As Engineering Manager for our Data Management domain, you'll empower the Central Database and Scheduling team to deliver secure, reliable, and scalable services that keep our core data platforms running smoothly across Albert Heijn, Etos, and Gall & Gall.

This is how you will reinvent food retail.

  • You lead, coach, and develop the Central Database and Scheduling team, fostering a culture of ownership, engineering excellence, and accountability.
  • You build empowered, autonomous, T-shaped teams and actively remove non-technical overhead to keep teams unblocked.
  • You ensure high-quality delivery of database and scheduling services with a strong focus on resilience, maintainability, and operational excellence.
  • You embed security by design principles across all engineering practices and ensure compliance with internal and external security standards.
  • You drive engineering best practices in automation, monitoring, scheduling reliability, and operational support, ensuring consistent quality across the team.
  • You collaborate closely with stakeholders to translate business and platform needs into executable, outcome-focused delivery plans.
  • You align technical decisions across the team and ensure adherence to architectural and security guidelines.
  • You monitor platform performance, incident trends, delivery metrics, and financial spend to continuously improve team effectiveness, efficiency, and service stability.
  • You manage capacity, hiring, and skill development to sustain strong delivery capabilities over time.
  • You work closely with architecture, product, and security leaders to evolve the data management landscape and ensure it remains robust and future-proof.

Your new team and office.

As Engineering Manager, you will join the Data Differentiation Platform (DDP) department, responsible for the Cloud, Database Platform, and Middleware & Scheduling services that support Albert Heijn, Etos, and Gall & Gall. You will lead two engineering teams (around 30 DevSecOps Engineers) who develop and operate our database platform - the foundation for innovation across all our brands.

Our platform, built primarily on Azure and OCI, provides secure, reliable, and scalable infrastructure, enabling teams to build and run applications efficiently. We maintain a strong focus on FinOps practices to ensure cost efficiency. Your primary focus is to deliver high-quality, secure, and reliable database and scheduling capabilities, ensuring teams deliver predictably and continuously improve.

The main technologies in scope are Oracle, MS SQL, MongoDB, and Control-M, running in both Azure and Oracle Cloud environments.

At Albert Heijn, you'll work with inspiring peers in data, digital, and tech—a diverse community with a shared goal: making (online) shopping simpler and more inspiring. We invest heavily in technology and your career. Our teams work hybrid: from home and at our office next to Zaandam train station.

The recipe for maximum impact.

  • Proven experience leading multiple engineering or platform teams in a data management or infrastructure environment.
  • Strong understanding of database technologies and scheduling platforms.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Deep knowledge of reliability, operational excellence, automation, and service continuity.
  • Practical experience with secure operations and data protection practices.
  • Strong organizational and delivery management skills. You ensure your team delivers consistently and at high quality.
  • A people-centered leadership style focused on growth, collaboration, and trust.

What we offer.

  • An annual salary up to 105k including holiday allowance and a flexible bonus, depending on your level of seniority and experience.
  • A minimum of 20 days paid vacation, optionally 12.5 days extra. Do you want to take that extra time off, or would you rather convert the extra days into discounts or sell them for cash? You're the end boss!
  • Flexible working hours.
  • Access to a challenging training curriculum - AH Top Academy.
  • An excellent pension plan where we as an employer contribute 4,5 more than you as an employee.
  • A travel allowance or a NS-business card for traveling to and from Zaandam by train.
  • Attractive discounts on various insurance policies.
  • 10% staff discount on groceries in all Albert Heijn stores, to a maximum of €300 per year.
  • A free Mijn Albert Heijn Premium membership with many benefits.
  • A company laptop and telephone.

Albert Heijn the Netherlands is B Corp certified. This underscores our purpose, through which we aim to contribute to a healthier, more social, and sustainable society.
