The Hague, Netherlands (Hybrid - Flexible)
I'm currently partnering with a stealth, privacy-first AI healthtech company that's building the infrastructure needed to unlock sensitive clinical data safely and responsibly.
They're developing technology that enables healthcare and life-science organisations to make better use of clinical data, improving access to clinical trials, supporting real-world evidence, and accelerating medical research.
They're now looking for a Senior Data Engineer to own the trusted clinical-data foundation behind their products, customer workflows and research environments.
This is not simply a pipeline-building role. You'll be working with messy, real-world clinical data from hospital and EHR systems, investigating its quality, semantics and relationships before designing the engineering solutions needed to make that data reliable, reusable and production-ready.
You'll join a small, multidisciplinary team working across data, AI, product, clinical, privacy/security and customer delivery, with significant autonomy and ownership over technically challenging problems.
The Successful Senior Data Engineer will have:
- A strong senior-level track record of independently owning, shipping and operating production data platforms or pipelines end-to-end.
- Strong Python and SQL skills, including data modelling, complex queries, testing, debugging and maintainable production code.
- Hands-on experience designing and operating ETL/ELT pipelines, with Apache Airflow or comparable orchestration experience.
- Experience investigating and modelling messy structured and unstructured data before implementing production pipelines.
- Strong engineering practices around automated testing, code review, version control, documentation, CI/CD and observability.
- Experience working in cloud-native environments, ideally with Google Cloud; Azure experience is also valuable.
- Hands-on experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
- The ownership, judgement and communication skills required to work effectively in a small, multidisciplinary team.
- Professional fluency in English and a relevant degree or equivalent practical experience.
Senior Data Engineer Nice to Haves:
- Experience working with clinical, healthcare or EHR data.
- Experience with FHIR, HL7, OMOP, openEHR or other healthcare interoperability standards.
- Familiarity with clinical terminology and coding systems such as ICD, SNOMED CT, LOINC or ATC.
- Experience with clinical research, clinical trials, registries or real-world evidence.
- Exposure to LLMs, medical NLP, RAG, embeddings, knowledge graphs or modern AI applications.
- Experience with Terraform, dbt or Kafka.
- Experience working in regulated environments or collaborating with Dutch-language customers.
Benefits for the successful Senior Data Engineer:
- Work on meaningful clinical-data problems that can increase access to clinical trials and accelerate medical research.
- High autonomy and genuine influence over architecture, engineering standards and delivery practices.
- A high-spec MacBook Pro and access to leading engineering and AI tools.
- Flexible hybrid working with significant autonomy.
- The opportunity to work abroad for two periods of up to two weeks per year, subject to applicable requirements.
- 25 paid holiday days per year, plus commuting compensation.
- A dedicated learning and development budget.
- The opportunity to grow into a Founding Engineer role, with broader technical leadership and ownership.
- A collaborative, multidisciplinary team working on technology that directly impacts patients, healthcare and medical research.
This is an opportunity for a Senior Data Engineer who enjoys making messy, high-stakes data dependable to take genuine ownership of the data foundation behind an ambitious healthtech company.
