Job summary

Alfen seeks a Senior Commissioning Engineer to lead on-site commissioning of advanced Energy Storage Systems (ESS) across the Netherlands and abroad. You will perform measurements, tests, troubleshooting, and oversee handover, with a focus on safety and adherence to standards.

Based in the Netherlands, you will coordinate with project teams, guide technicians, and contribute feedback to development for continuous improvement.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Industrial Automation.
• 10+ years in commissioning and electrical engineering projects.
• Supervisory experience.
• Experience with PLC systems (Siemens) and embedded software.
• Knowledge of electrical installations at low- and high-voltage levels.
• Authorization as an installation and/or operational manager (IV/WV).
• VCA VOL certificate; First Aid (BHV) is a plus.
• Strong command of Dutch and English.
• Residence in the Netherlands is a strict requirement.

Responsibilities

• Commissioning ESS installations on-site and ensuring proper system integration.
• Performing electrical measurements, testing, and inspections of HV/LV components.
• Identify and resolve technical issues, in collaboration with other disciplines.
• Conduct maintenance per NEN 3140/3840 standards.
• Prepare technical reports on completed work and deviations.
• Supervise and guide (assistant) technicians on project sites.
• Participate in on-call and standby rotations.
• Support less experienced team members.

Job description

Play a key role in the successful commissioning of battery energy storage systems (ESS) across the Netherlands and abroad. Use your technical expertise to drive the energy transition and help build the electricity grid of the future.

What will you be doing?

As a Senior Commissioning Engineer at Alfen, you will focus on commissioning, managing, and maintaining our advanced Energy Storage Systems (ESS). These systems are essential for balancing the electricity grid and making optimal use of renewable energy sources.

You will be technically responsible for the final phase of our ESS projects—from performing measurements and tests to troubleshooting and overseeing the handover process. Your work will primarily take place on project sites in the Netherlands, with occasional assignments abroad. You will also provide valuable feedback to our development teams to support continuous improvement.

Your tasks and responsibilities include:

• Commissioning ESS installations on-site, including proper system integration.
• Performing electrical measurements, testing, and inspections on low- and high-voltage components.
• Identifying, analyzing, and resolving technical issues, often in collaboration with other disciplines.
• Conducting maintenance activities in accordance with NEN 3140/3840 standards.
• Checking product quality on-site and initiating improvements.
• Preparing technical reports on completed work, deviations, and inspection findings.
• Supervising and guiding (assistant) technicians on project sites.
• Participating in on-call and standby service rotations.
• Support and guide the less experienced team members.

What do we ask of you?

We are looking for an experienced technical specialist with a hands‑on approach, who can work independently and takes ownership. You are communicative, detail-oriented, and always operate according to applicable safety standards. You also bring:

• A completed bachelor’s degree (HBO-level) in Electrical Engineering or Industrial Automation.
• 10+ years of relevant experience in commissioning, electrical engineering projects, preferably in energy storage or high-voltage systems.
• Supervisory experience
• Experience with PLC systems (e.g., Siemens) and embedded software.
• Knowledge of electrical installations at both low- and high-voltage levels.
• Authorization as an installation and/or operational manager (IV/WV).
• A valid VCA VOL certificate; First Aid (BHV) is a plus.
• Strong command of both Dutch and English.
• You already live in the Netherlands - due to the nature of the work, travel to project sites, and participation in on-call services, being a resident of the Netherlands is a strict requirement.
