Job description

Process Control Engineer – Biogas Upgrading & CO₂ Recovery

Location: Venlo, NL

Travel: ~15%

Tec Partners Recruitment are looking for an experienced Process Control Engineer to take a key role in the design, implementation, and optimisation of control systems for advanced biogas upgrading and CO₂ recovery plants. You’ll help shape control philosophies, contribute to instrumentation selection, support PLC/automation programming, and work closely with multidisciplinary teams from concept design through commissioning and operation.

This position reports into the Team Leader, Process Engineering (Biogas), and plays an essential part in delivering safe, reliable, and high-performance plants.

What you’ll be doing

• Control System Design: Develop functional descriptions, control loops, sequence diagrams, setpoints, and cause-and-effect matrices for new and existing plant designs. Ensure compliance with relevant laws, standards, and site‑specific requirements.
• Implementation & Commissioning: Support PLC programming (Siemens TIA Portal), FAT testing, alarm management, and loop tuning. Assist commissioning teams on site and help optimise plant performance through advanced control strategies.
• Continuous Improvement: Troubleshoot control‑related issues and drive improvements in reliability, efficiency, and overall product quality.
• Cross‑Functional Collaboration: Align designs with mechanical, electrical, automation and commissioning teams, as well as suppliers. Represent process control concepts internally and externally, ensuring clear communication and documentation.
• Safety & Compliance: Contribute to HAZOP, risk assessments, SIL studies, and prepare operating manuals, functional descriptions, and customer documentation.
• Technical Expertise: Act as a subject matter expert within the team, sharing process control knowledge and delivering training to engineers, project leaders and sales colleagues.

What you’ll bring

• Degree in Chemical, Electrical, Automation Engineering, or similar.
• Significant experience in process control engineering within gas processing, chemical, or energy industries.
• Strong background with industrial control systems, HMI/SCADA design, and tools such as Siemens TIA Portal.
• 6+ years’ experience designing and commissioning control systems for complex process plants (biogas upgrading, CO₂ capture or cryogenic processes is a strong advantage).
• Able to lead cross‑functional workstreams without direct reports and influence stakeholders across the organisation.
• Excellent understanding of process instrumentation, safety systems and relevant standards.
• Strong communicator with solid documentation and problem‑solving skills; comfortable handling complex process structures.
• Proactive, adaptable, resilient and team‑oriented.
• Fluent in English; additional European languages are an advantage.
• Willing to travel internationally ~15%.
