Job summary

Elsevier is seeking a Principal Data Scientist (AI/NLP & Generative AI) to lead technical direction across data science teams and shape how AI, NLP and retrieval-based solutions are designed and delivered for knowledge discovery. You will set standards, ensure governance, and guide architecture while remaining hands-on on high-risk work.

You will mentor multiple teams, harmonise tooling, and communicate strategy to senior leadership, driving impactful, scalable AI initiatives for life sciences

Qualifications

• Significant experience in data science, AI, ML, NLP or related fields at senior/principal level.
• Hands-on background building AI/ML, NLP, generative AI, and retrieval based systems.
• Expertise with LLMs, fine tuning, prompting and responsible AI practices.
• Experience defining technical standards, evaluation frameworks, or governance processes.
• Working knowledge of AI governance, model risk and compliance.

Responsibilities

• Set technical direction and architectural standards for AI/ML, NLP and generative AI across teams.
• Guide integration of metadata, ontologies, taxonomies into AI workflows with reusable patterns.
• Review architecture and code to ensure production readiness; hands-on when needed.
• Lead governance, monitoring, and quality audits for consistent delivery.
• Mentor and coach multiple teams; harmonise tooling and delivery practices.
