Job summary

Utrecht University invites applications for a PhD position in the Department of Earth Sciences. The project DEEP-FLUX investigates low-density particle transport through submarine canyons, focusing on turbidity currents and their impact on POC and microplastics burial.

The PhD candidate will conduct lab experiments, help build and validate a sediment flux model, and train within a dynamic, international environment.

Qualifications

  • MSc degree in Earth Sciences, Physical Geography, Oceanography, Civil or Hydraulic Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience in experiments with water and/or sediment.
  • Coding experience.
  • Strong written, graphical and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct experiments on mixing in turbidity currents and test turbulent diffusion of microplastics and POC.
  • Contribute to the DEEP-FLUX project delivering experimental results and data for model integration.
  • Collaborate with project team and supervisors to validate findings.
