Job summary

Utrecht University is advertising a two-year, full-time Postdoctoral position in subsurface freshwater storage and groundwater modelling. The successful candidate will improve a regional high-resolution groundwater model and analyze storage feasibility in Zeeland and Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, linking field evidence with modelling results.

The role requires a PhD in hydrogeology or related field, experience with MODFLOW-based tools, and proficiency in Python and GIS.

Qualifications

PhD in hydrogeology, physical geography, earth sciences, civil or environmental engineering or related field.
Experience with numerical groundwater modelling, preferably variable-density flow and solute transport.
Strong programming/data-analysis skills (Python) and GIS-based spatial analysis.
Publications and scientific writing in English; ability to communicate across disciplines.

Responsibilities

Improve, document and apply a regional groundwater model for variable-density flow and salinity simulations.
Analyse controls on subsurface water storage and interactions with surface water and climate.
Design reproducible scenario and sensitivity analyses to quantify model uncertainty.
Develop spatial potentiality maps for subsurface storage with uncertainty guidance.
Collaborate with partners across the STURDI-Water consortium and publish results.
