Job summary

Leiden University invites applications for a PhD position within the LangPro project at the Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society (LUCAS). The PhD candidate will analyse how women benefited from language-sector work across England, the Low Countries, France, and the German lands, using biographical data, writings and correspondence.

The position is 1.0 FTE (38 hrs/week) for four years, starting 1 January 2027, with a salary from €3,204 to €4,051 per month.

Qualifications

• ResMA/MA with grade 8.0+ on thesis (or equivalent)
• Willing to travel up to 2 months in archives/libraries in UK, Belgium, France, Germany in years 1–2
• Strong research skills: formulate creative questions, descriptive/analytical work, clear writing
• Interest in language sector and gender studies
• Proficiency in English (speaking, writing, reading) and willingness to learn Dutch, German, or French
• Proven time-management skills; team player and independent thinker
• Ability to finish proposed PhD research in 4 years

Responsibilities

• Conduct research on the role of women in the early modern language sector in archives/libraries across Europe
• Complete a PhD thesis in English within four years
• Contribute to the LangPro project database
• Publish at least two co-authored articles in peer-reviewed venues
• Present papers at conferences in the Netherlands and internationally
• Attend monthly project meetings and training sessions
• Engage in PhD community and LUCAS activities
• Possibly teach in years 2–3 according to expertise
