Job summary

The University of Groningen is inviting applications for a PhD position in Neuromorphic Computing, FPGA Design, and Hardware Acceleration. You will contribute to architecture design, hardware implementation, FPGA prototyping, and AI applications, within the QuNeCo project and an international team.

The role covers end-to-end hardware design flow, from architecture exploration to experimental evaluation, with collaborations across the Netherlands and Japan and opportunities to publish widely.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Embedded Systems, or a closely related field.
  • Strong background in computer architecture and digital hardware design.
  • Experience with hardware description languages such as Verilog, SystemVerilog, or VHDL.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop neuromorphic computing architectures based on application requirements.
  • Investigate memory technologies (SRAM, RRAM, MRAM, FeRAM) for neuromorphic hardware.
  • Develop RTL implementations of neuromorphic architectures and validate them with simulations.
  • Evaluate performance, energy efficiency, and scalability using EDA tools.
  • Prototype hardware accelerators on FPGA platforms and integrate into heterogeneous systems.
  • Collaborate with project partners in the Netherlands and Japan and publish results.
  • Contribute to teaching activities and supervise Bachelor’s and Master’s students.
