Job summary

TU Delft invites applications for a PhD position Understanding and Predicting High Suspended Sediment Dynamics in Estuaries. You will extend a two‑dimensional vertical (2DV) estuarine model by developing novel turbulence closures to capture mutual interactions between turbulence and sediment transport under highly turbid conditions.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics, or related discipline.
  • Expertise in development of mathematical models for geophysical flows and turbulence using analytical and numerical techniques.
  • Ability to work rigorously and evaluate results, both independently and in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong communication skills in English; willingness to learn Dutch.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and analyse new process-based mathematical models for sediment dynamics in hyperturbid estuaries.
  • Extend a 2DV estuarine model with novel turbulence closures accounting for turbulence–sediment interactions.
  • Investigate turbidity maxima, fluid mud formation and sediment retention across parameter regimes.
  • Collaborate with TU Delft, iMose postdocs and Deltares to connect theory to real-world estuarine management.
