Job summary

Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) invites applications for a PhD candidate to develop and analyze new process-based mathematical models for sediment-rich estuaries. The project focuses on highly turbid conditions, turbulence interactions, and sediment transport, with collaboration across the iMose project and Deltares.

The researcher will advance estuarine modeling through turbulence closures, asymptotic analyses, and numerical simulations, linking theory to European estuary observations

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in (Applied) Mathematics, Applied Physics, or a related discipline is required.
  • Candidates should have demonstrated expertise in development of mathematical models for geophysical flows and turbulence using analytical and numerical techniques.
  • Strong communication skills including fluency in English, both written and spoken; willingness to learn Dutch.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and analyze new process-based mathematical models to improve understanding and predictive capability of sediment dynamics in hyperturbid estuaries.
  • Extend existing two-dimensional vertical (2DV) estuarine models by implementing turbulence closures accounting for interactions between turbulence and sediment dynamics.
  • Use analytical techniques, asymptotic methods, and numerical simulations to investigate turbidity maxima, fluid mud layers, and sediment retention in estuaries.
