Job summary

Maastricht University seeks a PhD Candidate in NeuroAI for Auditory Neuroscience to investigate how the brain transforms natural sounds into representations using state-of-the-art AI models. The project is part of NASCE and collaborates with ARCHIE lab under Prof. Elia Formisano.

You will bridge human neuroimaging and computational modelling, collecting high-field fMRI data and developing AI/NeuroAI approaches to compare brain and machine representations. Start date flexible; deadline Sep 2026.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in cognitive or computational neuroscience, AI, CS, biomedical engineering or related quantitative field.
  • Experience in human neuroimaging or AI/machine learning/NeuroAI is required.
  • Strong programming skills, Python preferred, ability to write/adapt code for data processing and visualization.
  • English proficiency at CEFR C1 or higher.

Responsibilities

  • Acquire and analyse high-field neuroimaging data related to natural sound perception.
  • Develop and apply AI/NeuroAI models including deep networks for auditory processing.
  • Relate AI representations to behavioural and brain data using multivariate and representational modelling.
  • Contribute to experimental design and execution in neuroimaging and behaviour tasks.
  • Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at international conferences.
  • Participate in open and reproducible research through well-documented pipelines and data products.
  • Possibly contribute up to 0.1 FTE to teaching or supervision at Maastricht University.
