Job summary

The University of Amsterdam invites applications for a four-year PhD position in Evolution and processing of languages with late negation. You will join an international team of (psycho)linguists and cognitive scientists, using EEG and fieldwork to study why negation is expressed early in sentences, including data from indigenous language communities in Ecuador.

The post offers a 48‑month contract with a 38‑hour week and a gross salary of €3,204–€4,051 per month, plus holiday and year-end

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Psychology or similar.
• Excellent research and academic English skills demonstrated by a Master thesis.
• Strong interest in fieldwork/field-based experimental methods.
• Conversational proficiency in Spanish.
• Strong cooperative attitude and willingness to engage in collaborative research.

Responsibilities

• Submission of a PhD thesis within the appointment period.
• Present intermediate results at workshops and conferences.
• Participation in Research School and PhD training programmes.
• Co-teaching courses at BA-level (max 0.2 FTE per year).
• Conduct field-based experiments in Ecuador.
• Organise knowledge dissemination activities.
• Attend project meetings and training sessions.
