Job summary

Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL) invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in Dutch morphology and constructicography. The PhD will work on the Morphicon project, building a Dutch morphological constructicon and studying the balance between grammatical regularity and lexical idiosyncrasy.

The appointment runs four years, starting January 2027, with a first 12-month contract and extension contingent on performance.

Qualifications

  • Native or near-native proficiency of Dutch and a good command of academic English.
  • Demonstrable interest in grammar, especially morphology.
  • Excellent research and analytical skills.
  • Experience in computational linguistics is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Extract word-formation patterns from descriptive literature and encode them in systematic schemas.
  • Match complex words to schemas and annotate for network construction.
  • Assist in finding, testing and evaluating digital tools including LLMs for classification and annotation.
  • Investigate Dutch morphological constructions quantitatively and qualitatively.
  • Present research results at workshops and conferences.
  • Publish research results and write the PhD thesis within the appointment period.
  • Assist in teaching activities at bachelor level.
  • Participate in knowledge dissemination activities and meetings.
