Job description

Application deadline: Early as possible

Where innovative ship design meets an open, collaborative engineering culture

At Ulstein Design & Solutions BV, we design offshore vessels that need to perform safely, efficiently and sustainably in the real world. From offshore wind installation vessels to subsea construction ships, our work has a direct impact on offshore operations for decades. That awareness shapes how we think and design: practical, curious, collaborative and focused on the long term.

We are part of the Norwegian Ulstein Group, a family-owned maritime innovator with more than a century of shipbuilding history. Yet our Rotterdam office remains small on purpose—around 25 colleagues who value trust, craftsmanship and teamwork over hierarchy. It is a place where people naturally help each other, where knowledge is shared openly and where humour and professionalism go hand in hand.

Let's get to know each other

If you would like to get a feeling for our team first, we are happy to arrange an informal chat or simply just join us for a coffee with one of our colleagues. No pressure, just a conversation.

As a Naval Architect, you will play a key role in developing innovative vessels for the offshore energy sector, from early concepts through Basic Design. You will be part of a multidisciplinary design team, working closely with colleagues to translate client requirements into practical, efficient and innovative vessel concepts.

You will be an integral part of the design team, contributing to:

  • Preparing design documents such as General Arrangements, tank plans and other concept and Basic Design deliverables.
  • Performing calculations including stability, seakeeping, DP capability, speed and resistance.
  • Participating in technical discussions with clients, Classification Societies and equipment suppliers.
  • Keeping up to date with technical developments and innovations in the maritime industry.
  • Depending on your experience, mentoring junior engineers and contributing to the team's technical development.
Who are you?

You are an analytical and pragmatic engineer who enjoys working at the intersection of theory, simulation, and practical ship design. You are comfortable taking ownership of technical topics and communicating complex results clearly.

You are a naval architect with a passion for ship design who enjoys working in multidisciplinary teams and is eager to broaden your technical knowledge while taking on new challenges. You are comfortable taking ownership of technical topics and clearly communicating your findings.

You bring:

  • MSc in Naval Architecture / Maritime Technology or BSc in Naval Architecture.
  • The ability to work in a structured, independent and accurate manner while remaining a strong team player.
  • Clear communication skills in English (spoken and written); Dutch is an advantage but not required.
  • A proactive mindset with curiosity to improve methods, assumptions and design outcomes.
  • Affinity with innovative vessel concepts and complex offshore operations.

Nice to have

  • Experience as a Naval Architect during the Concept and Basic Design phases.
  • Experience working with Classification Society Rules (ABS, DNV, LR or similar).
  • Experience with naval architecture software such as Delftship, NAPA, GHS or similar tools.
  • Familiarity with scripting or automation (e.g. Python) to support engineering workflows.
Why Ulstein?
  • A friendly, international team culture without silos.
  • Space to grow, think, contribute and influence.
  • A high degree of responsibility and the opportunity to influence vessel concepts from an early stage.
  • Work that contributes to sustainable offshore energy.
  • Designs that progress from concept through Basic Design to construction.
