Job summary

SLAM Ortho is seeking a Mechanical Design & Industrialisation Engineer in the Netherlands. You will lead the industrialisation and design transfer of our Class IIa medical device, translating small-scale builds into scalable, validated manufacturing processes.

You will collaborate with Software, Electronics, Clinical teams, suppliers and our CMO to ensure regulatory and performance needs are met, and drive improvements in manufacturability, yield and lead times.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 3–5 years of product development and scaling to production environments.
  • 3D CAD design experience with Fusion 360 (or SolidWorks/Creo).
  • Experience in design for manufacturing (DFM/A, GD&T) and with plastics/metals.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the industrialisation of our Class IIa medical device, translating small scale builds into scalable, validated manufacturing processes.
  • Define, build, and validate products and tooling; work hands-on in our workshop to test prototypes, jigs and fixtures, analyze results, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Optimize new and existing designs for manufacturability (DFM/DFA) and process control, preparing the product for transfer to an external production partner.
  • Create and release technical documentation: specifications, drawings, test setups, and work instructions that others can reproduce.
  • Collaborate closely with Software, Electronics, and Clinical teams, as well as suppliers and our CMO, to align mechanical solutions with regulatory and performance needs.
  • Engage directly with customers to understand feedback and technical pain points, driving improvements in product performance.
  • Anticipate risks and turn them into actionable design or process solutions; use data to boost quality, yield, reliability, and reduce costs and lead times.

Mechanical Design & Industrialization Engineer

At SLAM Ortho, we are dedicated to empowering trauma surgeons with innovative sensor technology, enabling them to provide superior care for patients with fractures.

By combining advanced sensor technology, smart data analysis and a reusable device design, we help surgeons operate faster and place implants more precisely - reducing complications and supporting quicker recovery. In this role, you will work with cutting‑edge technology, directly improve patients’ lives, and contribute significantly to enhancing the quality of our healthcare system.

Role description

Your first challenge will be to lead the industrialisation and design transfer of our current device. From there, you’ll help shape the next generation of SLAM products — applying everything you’ve learned about manufacturability, process control, and design robustness.

As our Mechanical Design & Industrialisation Engineer you would:

  • Lead the industrialisation of our Class IIa medical device, translating small scale builds into scalable, validated manufacturing processes.
  • IQ/OQ/PQ doesn’t scare you; it’s just part of making things work reliably.
  • Define, build, and validate products and tooling. Work hands‑on in our workshop to test prototypes, jigs and fixtures, analyse results, and drive continuous improvement with the team.
  • Optimise new and existing designs for manufacturability (DFM/DFA) and process control, preparing the product for transfer to an external production partner.
  • Create and release technical documentation: specifications, drawings, test setups, and work instructions that others can reproduce.
  • Collaborate closely with Software, Electronics, and Clinical teams, as well as suppliers and our CMO, to align mechanical solutions with regulatory and performance needs - now and in future product development.
  • Engage directly with customers to understand feedback and technical pain points, driving improvements in product performance.
  • Anticipate risks and turn them into actionable design or process solutions. Use data to boost quality, yield, reliability, efficiency, and reduce COGS and lead times.

What we expect from you

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial engineering or equivalent
  • 3–5 years of relevant experience in product development and scaling to production environments
  • Strong skills in 3D CAD (we work with Fusion 360, but SolidWorks or Creo experience will work too)
  • Experience in design for manufacturing (DFM/A, GD&T, both plastics and metals)
  • Experience in supplier management and establishing supply chains for components and assemblies
  • Strongly preferred experience working in a regulated industry, such as medical devices (MDR, ISO 13485, FDA), and with design documentation
  • Driver’s license, as you will be expected to travel to our suppliers and CMO (all in the Netherlands)
