Design and detail complex mechanical and mechatronic machinery for X-Laboratory's offshore motion compensation and maritime robotics systems. You will work hands‑on in 3D CAD and take designs from concept through manufacturing drawings, supplier fabrication, assembly and testing.
We are looking for an experienced machinery designer with strong practical knowledge of mechanisms, steel structures, machining, weldments, tolerances and mechanical assembly.
Responsibilities: What you do
- design complex machinery including winches, actuator systems, mechanisms, structural frames and lifting/handling equipment
- create and maintain parametric 3D CAD models, large assemblies and structured sub-assemblies
- design mechanisms using rotary and linear actuators, bearings, shafts, couplings, joints, fasteners and linear guidance systems
- design machined parts, sheet-metal components, weldments and large load-bearing steel structures
- produce complete 2D manufacturing, weld-assembly and general assembly drawings
- define materials, steels, fits, tolerances, interfaces, surface treatments and standard machine components
- generate and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) and controlled CAD/manufacturing documentation
- prepare technical packages for tendering and support supplier selection
- supervise manufacturing, fabrication and assembly and resolve technical issues and non-conformances
- support mechanical integration, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and, occasionally, commissioning at client or offshore locations
Accountabilities: What you are measured against
- CAD Quality — stable, structured and maintainable parametric models and assemblies
- Drawing Quality — complete and correct manufacturing and weld-assembly drawings with minimal supplier clarification
- Mechanical Design Quality — correct application of materials, tolerances, fits, interfaces and machine-design principles
- Manufacturing Readiness — designs can be manufactured and assembled without avoidable redesign or rework
- Configuration Control — released CAD models, drawings and BOMs are complete, consistent and revision-controlled
- Delivery — engineering and drawing packages released according to agreed project milestones
- Manufacturing Support — supplier and assembly issues resolved promptly and correctly
- excellent practical 3D mechanical design and drafting capability
- strong understanding of machinery, mechanisms, tolerancing and steel fabrication
- understands how parts are machined, welded, assembled and maintained
- able to manage complex CAD assemblies in a disciplined manner
- hands-on and comfortable working directly with suppliers, fabricators and assembly teams
- precise, independent and strongly focused on buildable engineering
Qualifications
Requirements:
- B.Sc./M.Sc./HBO in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or equivalent professional background
- 5+ years of professional CAD design experience with complex industrial machinery
- advanced parametric 3D CAD and 2D manufacturing-drawing experience
- experience with complex assemblies and sub-assembly structures
- practical knowledge of steels, machine tolerancing, fits and mechanical interfaces
- experience with CNC-machined parts, sheet metal, welded structures and weld-assembly drawings
- experience with mechanisms, rotating equipment, linear guidance and standard machine components
- proven experience supporting manufacture, assembly and testing of machinery you have designed
Strong assets:
- Solid Edge experience; SolidWorks, Creo/ProENGINEER, CATIA or comparable systems also relevant
- PLM/PDM and controlled engineering-release experience
- winches, cranes, lifting/hoisting equipment, robotics, heavy machinery or hydraulic systems
- experience with large machinery and structures in the 1-1,000 tonne class
- offshore, maritime, naval, shipbuilding or heavy-industry experience
- familiarity with DNV, Lloyd's Register or Bureau Veritas requirements
- practical understanding of structural calculations/FEM
