Job description

We are looking for a Java Software Engineer to help us build new functionality and add improvements to our software. If you have an eye for writing code and are interested in agile methodologies, we’d like to meet you!

Key about your team

You will become part of the Voluntary Choices team, a cross‑functional Scrum team within our Development & Maintenance department. The team is distributed across the Netherlands and India and consists of design engineers, software engineers, and test engineers who work closely together to deliver high‑quality software.

We embrace an agile mindset. Everyone contributes throughout the entire development lifecycle, from refining requirements and designing solutions to developing, testing, and delivering production‑ready software.

The Voluntary Choices team develops and maintains business‑critical functionality in three main areas:

  • Product lifecycle services – supporting the creation, modification and termination of voluntary pension products, including voluntary ANW, extra savings, net pension and voluntary continuation.
  • Business process orchestration – implementing event‑driven workflows that support participant actions, pension clicks, internal reselections and other pension administration processes.
  • Financial processing components – responsible for premium distribution, contribution processing, fiscal validation and batch processing to ensure accurate and compliant pension administration.

Our solutions are used daily by pension providers in the Netherlands, Denmark and Norway and support business‑critical processes for millions of pension participants.

Key about your role

As a Medior Java Software Engineer, you will develop and maintain the functionality behind our Voluntary Choices domain within Plexus. Together with your Scrum team, you are responsible for translating complex pension legislation and customer requirements into reliable, maintainable and scalable software.

Working closely with design engineers and test engineers, you will build new functionality, improve existing processes and help ensure that pension providers can efficiently manage voluntary pension products for millions of participants.

Responsibilities
  • Develop new functionality and improve existing components within Plexus.
  • Translate functional designs into high‑quality software solutions.
  • Participate in all Scrum activities, including sprint planning, daily stand‑ups, reviews and retrospectives.
  • Design, develop and maintain software in accordance with our architectural, quality and security standards.
  • Write clean, maintainable and well‑tested Java code with attention to performance, scalability and maintainability.
  • Create and maintain unit, integration and system tests.
  • Analyse, troubleshoot and resolve software defects.
  • Contribute to architectural discussions and continuously improve our engineering practices.
  • Keep technical documentation accurate and up to date.

We continuously invest in modern engineering practices. As part of your daily work, you’ll use AI‑assisted development tools such as Claude Code and OpenAI Code to support software design, implementation, refactoring and code reviews. These tools are embedded in our development workflow and help us improve productivity while maintaining high standards for code quality, maintainability and security.

As part of our engineering community, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to learn from experienced colleagues, exchange knowledge and continue developing your technical skills.

You are passionate about software development and enjoy solving complex technical challenges together with your team. You take pride in writing clean, maintainable code and continuously look for ways to improve both yourself and the software you build.

We are looking for someone who
  • Has experience with Java, Git, Gradle, and SQL (DB2/PostgreSQL).
  • Has experience developing unit, integration, and system tests.
  • Is comfortable working in an Agile/Scrum environment.
  • Has strong analytical skills with a collaborative mindset.
  • Is focused on software quality, performance and maintainability.
  • Is proficient in English.

A Certificate of Conduct (VOG) and reference check are part of the application process.

Each employee within Keylane must follow training on information security, and irrespective of the role, basic information security responsibilities apply.

Benefits
  • A monthly gross salary between €4,300 and €5,400 based on 40 hours per week.
  • 8% holiday allowance of your total gross salary.
  • A profit share.
  • A pension scheme, with the option to save extra.
  • Travel reimbursement: Receive a mileage allowance of €0.23 per km or an NS Business Card, which can also be used for personal travel.
  • 24 holiday days (with the option to buy extra) and 7 inclusion days, which can be exchanged with fixed Dutch national holidays, allowing you to take them when you like.
  • Flexibility in working environment. As part of a hybrid working team, you will work partly from home and partly from the office. If you work in the office, a free lunch is waiting for you every day. If you work from home, you will receive a working‑from‑home allowance (€4 net per day) and internet allowance (€35 net per month).
  • The possibility of working remotely from abroad for up to 2 months per year.
  • The possibility to lease a bike through our bike leasing program.
  • A one‑year contract that, subject to satisfactory performance, will be converted into a permanent contract.
  • The opportunity to develop yourself at our Academy through courses and training, both professionally and personally.
