Job summary

European Space Agency (ESA) seeks an IT Infrastructure Engineer to join ESTEC in Noordwijk, NL. The role focuses on maintaining VMware/Hyper-V environments, automation, and secure integration of customer applications within mission-critical IT services.

Ideal candidates have 5+ years of IT infrastructure exp., strong scripting (PowerShell, Bash, Python) and Linux/Windows proficiency, plus English fluency. On-site work with international collaboration and relocation support.

Qualifications

• University degree (or equivalent) in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Informatics, or related discipline.
• 5+ years of experience as IT Infrastructure Engineer.
• Strong hands-on experience with AD, Windows Server, Linux (Debian/Ubuntu/CentOS).
• Proficiency in scripting/automation: PowerShell, Bash, Python.
• VMware, Hyper-V virtualization; Docker containerisation.
• Networking knowledge with TCP/IP; network switching.
• Experience with monitoring: Zabbix; backups with Veeam/NetBackup.
• Excellent troubleshooting and documentation skills.
• Fluent in English.

On behalf of ESA, we are looking for an IT Infrastructure Engineer to work at ESTEC’s premises in Noordwijk, The Netherlands.

About the client and location

The European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) is the European Space Agency’s (ESA) base in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. As ESA’s largest test centre, it is responsible for the majority of space technology and spacecraft development through varying phases of production.

Tasks and activities

The scope of work will include:

• Managing and maintaining VMware, Hyper-V and Cloud Director environments, ensuring effective infrastructure monitoring, capacity planning and platform optimisation.


• Administering and supporting a wide range of infrastructure technologies, including physical servers, network devices, storage platforms and backup solutions.


• Facilitating the secure integration of customer applications and services, ensuring alignment with network architecture and IT security policies.


• Operating and maintaining classified IT environments, ensuring compliance with security requirements, operational procedures and project documentation.


• Developing and implementing automation and support scripts using technologies such as Bash and Python to streamline operations, software orchestration and data reporting.


• Integrating project-delivered hardware, operating systems and application software into the client’s infrastructure, ensuring seamless deployment, compatibility and ongoing support.


• Contributing to the reliability, security and continuous improvement of mission-critical IT services and infrastructure.

Skills and experience

The following skills and experience are mandatory:

• University degree (or equivalent qualification) in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Informatics, or a related discipline.


• At least 5 years of proven experience working as an IT Infrastructure Engineer within a professional environment.


• Strong hands‑on experience with Active Directory, Windows Server, and Linux distributions, including Debian, Ubuntu and CentOS.


• Proficiency in scripting and automation using technologies such as PowerShell, Bash and Python.


• Solid expertise in virtualisation technologies, including VMware and Hyper-V, as well as containerisation platforms such as Docker.


• Strong understanding of networking concepts, with proven experience in network switching and TCP/IP protocol analysis.


• Experience with infrastructure monitoring and observability tools, particularly Zabbix, alongside enterprise backup solutions such as Veeam and NetBackup.


• Excellent troubleshooting, analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues.


• Strong documentation skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise and well-structured


• Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
