Job summary

TNO is offering an internship focused on understanding how long‑standing coal mining and groundwater withdrawal may have impacted the 1992 Roermond earthquake. You will join the Geological Survey of the Netherlands team to quantify stress changes using GIS, geomechanical and poroelastic methods and contribute to an MSc thesis.

You will gain experience in geosciences, numerical modelling, and earthquake mechanics while collaborating with an expert team exploring induced seismicity and subsurface

Qualifications

  • It helps if you are a Master’s student in Geoscience or related field.
  • Experience with Python, MATLAB, GIS tools, and data analysis is desirable.
  • Interest in earthquakes, fault mechanics, and numerical modelling is valued.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate whether mining and dewatering influenced the 1992 Roermond earthquake.
  • Reconstruct historical mining and groundwater extraction in the Lower Rhine Graben.
  • Apply geomechanical and poroelastic modelling to assess Coulomb stress changes.
