Job summary

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam invites applications for a Paid PhD position in Space Law and Artificial Intelligence within the EO-TRUST project. The role focuses on legal and ethical governance of AI-enabled Earth Observation, across space law, EU AI Act, and related frameworks.

The successful candidate will pursue independent doctoral research, collaborate across law, computer science and Earth Observation, and contribute to scholarly publications and policy outputs.

Qualifications

• LL.M. or equivalent master’s degree in law.
• Strong academic research and legal analytical skills.
• Excellent written and spoken English; ability to communicate research clearly to academic and non-academic audiences.
• Interest in technology (AI) law, space law, EU law or public international law.

Responsibilities

• Conduct independent doctoral research on legal and ethical governance of AI-enabled Earth Observation.
• Map and analyse applicable legal frameworks, including international space law and EU AI Act.
• Engage with governmental, regulatory, academic and industry stakeholders; conduct empirical research.
• Contribute to publications, policy outputs, conferences and development of responsible AI principles.
