Job summary

European Space Agency (ESA) invites university students to join the Future Missions and Architecture Department – System Architect Office for an internship in Earth Observation system architecture. You will contribute to building and analysing reference architectures for ESA’s Earth observation missions and explore system-of-systems concepts with horizon planning to 2060.

Qualifications

• You must be a university student, preferably in your final or second-to-last year of your Master's program, and enrolled for the entire duration of the internship.
• A good knowledge of English or French is required; knowledge of another ESA Member State language is a plus.
• Motivation for applying will be explored during the interview.
• Knowledge of Earth Observation remote sensing technologies and downstream science/applications is preferred.
• IT knowledge in databases and programming (e.g. Python).

Responsibilities

• Develop innovative technical Earth Observation scenarios and apply or develop relevant simulation tools.
• Analyze the effectiveness of EO satellite systems in synergy and identify gaps in capability.
• Explore opportunities for new systems-of-systems architectures and Earth system observatory concepts for 2024–2040 and 2040–2060.
• Build initial EO scenarios around core missions with reference performances.
• Use internal databases and benchmarking methods to compare different scenarios.
