As an Engineering Expert within our FX Engineering team, you will combine deep technical expertise with engineering leadership to help shape the future of our trading technology and the engineering organisation that supports it.

From a technical perspective, you will drive the development and evolution of our FX trading platform, delivering software that directly supports the business and its clients. Working closely with Trading, Sales, and engineering colleagues, you will help design and deliver solutions that are scalable, reliable, and aligned with front-office needs.

This is a senior, hands‑on role for someone who is comfortable combining technical leadership with practical delivery. You will guide the design and implementation of business-critical applications, translate complex business requirements into robust technical solutions, and ensure systems operate reliably in production.

Success in this role requires a combination of technical depth, pragmatism, and leadership. You will help engineers grow, drive continuous improvement, and bring people with you as the team evolves its technology, architecture, and ways of working.

Your job

What you will do

• Lead the design, development, and operation of enterprise-scale Java applications that underpin our FX technology ecosystem.
• Partner with Trading, Sales, and technology teams to translate business needs into robust and scalable solutions.
• Build and evolve low-latency, multithreaded applications using modern Java engineering practices.
• Drive solutions across key FX domains including pricing, risk management, trade execution, and post-trade processing.
• Take ownership for applications across the full lifecycle, from architecture and delivery through to production support and continuous improvement.
• Maintain high standards of reliability, performance, observability, and operational excellence.
• Identify opportunities to simplify architecture, reduce risk, and improve system resilience.
• Troubleshoot complex production issues and coordinate resolution across multiple systems and teams.
• Provide technical leadership through design reviews, code reviews, architecture discussions, and hands‑on contribution.
• Coach and mentor engineers, helping them develop technical expertise, sound engineering judgement, and greater accountability.
• Foster strong collaboration between engineering teams and Financial Markets stakeholders.
• Help shape engineering culture, raise technical standards, and establish effective ways of working across the team.
• Champion modern engineering practices, including the effective use of AI‑assisted software development tools and techniques.

Working environment

You will work in a collaborative and international DevOps team within ABN AMRO's Financial Markets division. The role offers a mix of software engineering and business interaction, with direct impact on Foreign Exchange (FX) trading applications. The environment is technically challenging, fast-paced, and focused on teamwork, knowledge sharing, continuous learning, and end-to-end ownership. Hybrid working applies, with approximately three days per week in the office.

Your profile

Essential experience

• 7-10 years of experience designing, building, and supporting enterprise software solutions in Java.
• Strong hands‑on experience with Java 17+ and the Spring ecosystem, including Spring Boot.
• Proven experience building scalable, distributed, multithreaded, and low‑latency applications.
• Experience working within Financial Markets technology, ideally supporting front‑office trading workflows.
• Ability to translate complex business requirements into practical, maintainable technical solutions.
• Experience leading technical initiatives and influencing engineering direction across teams.
• Experience supporting applications across the full software lifecycle, including architecture, delivery, production support, and continuous improvement.
• Strong understanding of software engineering best practices, including code reviews, automated testing, observability, and operational excellence.
• Experience coaching, mentoring, or leading engineers in a technical leadership capacity.

Education

An advanced degree in a relevant field, such as Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or a comparable discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

Desirable experience

• Knowledge of Foreign Exchange (FX) trading and market‑making environments.
• Understanding of pricing, risk management, trade execution, and post‑trade workflows.
• Experience with the FIX protocol and integration with electronic trading platforms.
• Experience developing and operating solutions on Microsoft Azure.
• Experience working in DevOps environments, including incident management, monitoring, release management, and production support.
• Interest in quantitative engineering and solving complex technical or financial challenges.
• Experience using AI‑assisted development tools, such as GitHub Copilot, to improve engineering productivity and software quality.
