Job summary

g2 Recruitment is seeking an Electrical Engineer to join the engineering team on a freelance basis in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The engineer will design, review, and deliver HV substations across the project lifecycle, coordinating with clients, EPC contractors, and stakeholders.

You will prepare SLDs, protection and control schematics, and equipment specs for AIS and GIS substations, and provide construction support during testing and energisation.

Qualifications

• HV substation experience including design and delivery.
• Background in primary and/or secondary design.
• Strong knowledge of protection & control systems and IEC 61850.
• Experience with utilities, TSOs/DSOs, EPCs or grid connection projects.
• Able to work independently in fast-paced projects.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and review HV substation design documentation including SLDs, protection schematics, cable schedules, and equipment specs.
• Deliver primary and/or secondary design for AIS and GIS substations.
• Support equipment selection and technical evaluations for transformers, switchgear, protection, and auxiliaries.
• Review vendor documentation for IEC standards and TenneT requirements where applicable.
• Participate in design reviews, technical workshops, and stakeholder meetings.
• Provide engineering support during construction, testing, commissioning, and energisation.
• Identify and resolve technical issues while ensuring safe, efficient project delivery.

The posted job is for an Electrical Engineer to join the engineering team on a freelance basis. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, review, and delivery of HV substation engineering activities across the project lifecycle, working closely with clients, EPC contractors, and key stakeholders to ensure technical excellence and compliance with industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare and review HV substation design documentation, including Single Line Diagrams, protection & control schematics, cable schedules, and equipment specifications.
• Deliver primary and/or secondary design engineering for AIS and GIS substations.
• Support equipment selection and technical evaluations for transformers, switchgear, protection systems, and substation auxiliaries.
• Review vendor documentation and ensure compliance with project specifications, IEC standards, and TenneT requirements where applicable.
• Participate in design reviews, technical workshops, and stakeholder meetings.
• Provide engineering support during construction, testing, commissioning, and energisation phases.
• Identify and resolve technical issues while ensuring projects are delivered safely and efficiently.

Requirements

• Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Strong experience delivering HV Substation projects, ideally within transmission and distribution environments.
• Proven background in primary and/or secondary design.
• Good understanding of protection & control systems, IEC 61850, transformers, switchgear, and earthing systems.
• Experience working with utilities, TSOs, DSOs, EPC contractors, or renewable energy grid connection projects.
• Ability to work independently within a fast-paced project environment.
• Fluent English is essential; Dutch language skills are advantageous.
