Job summary

Withthegrid in Utrecht is seeking a DevOps Engineer to build and operate the infrastructure underpinning our Asset Monitoring Platform and Teleport Gateway. You’ll work in the cloud team, migrating services toward European clouds, using Kubernetes, IaC (Terraform/OpenTofu), and Forgejo.

This hybrid role emphasizes collaboration with engineers and the CTO, offers growth opportunities, and supports the energy transition in a fast‑growing cleantech scale‑up.

Qualifications

• Experience running production systems in a scale-up environment.
• Experience with networking, Kubernetes, and IaC (Terraform/OpenTofu).
• Proficient in English; Dutch is a bonus.

About Withthegrid

Withthegrid is a rapidly growing European scale-up in the cleantech sector. We assist grid operators and renewable energy producers in managing their infrastructure more intelligently and efficiently.

Our Asset Monitoring Platform (AMP) provides real-time insights into the condition of networks through IoT technology. This enables our clients to monitor their assets more efficiently, resolve faults faster, and plan maintenance more effectively.

Our Teleport team focuses on increasing flexibility in the electricity grid. With our Teleport Gateway, owners of renewable energy sources and batteries can smartly control their assets and better respond to fluctuations in supply and demand. This helps both grid operators and energy producers accelerate the energy transition.

Your position as DevOps Engineer

As a DevOps Engineer in the cloud team of Withthegrid, you will focus on developing the infrastructure our products run on. As well as the infrastructure we need to run our company on. To date we run our services on AWS but we are moving away from all American cloud providers. For us that means we have recently ditched GitHub in favor of self hosting Forgejo. We are in the process of deploying kubernetes across two European cloud providers and you will help us move all of our databases, caches, kafka clusters, containers, load balancers etc there.

Collaboration will be a key aspect of your role. You’ll collaborate closely with your fellow engineers and the CTO. The dynamic environment of a scale-up and the uptime demands of running software that the electricity system relies on will allow you to flex your problem-solving muscles, bring your ideas to life, and contribute directly to accelerating the energy transition.

How does this role contribute to the success of the company?

• The uptime and security scores for our production infrastructure should rival those of amazon while being all European. You will keep our infrastructure reliable, scalable and secure.
• For our internal infrastructure, you empower your colleagues by making sure everything just works. Forgejo is only reachable for your colleagues and our build infrastructure. The vpn is always up. Our laptops update their software seamlessly.

What you’ll do

• Build new infrastructure (as code). We need to replace caches, container registries, existing servers, managed kafka, managed rds, load balancers etc
• Fix bugs. You’ll prevent them as much as possible, but if they pop-up, you’ll dive into them to analyze what is going on and create fixes for them.
• Scale up existing solutions. Together with the team, you’ll research and implement architecture and software patterns, so that our projects can scale up to several hundred thousands of devices in the field.
• Keep your colleagues working. You keep the company network running smoothly, schedule software updates for laptops to keep them secure. Improve our security posture on any system that is needed.

Who we’re looking for

• Technically curious. You can program in at least one C-style language and feel mentally flexible enough to sometimes help us out on some programming tasks in our typescript nodejs codebases. You are eager to dive into new technologies and stay up to date.
• Technically experienced. You bring expertise and a track record of running production systems that we can rely on for abilities that are underrepresented in our current team. Areas where expertise should at least be brought, Networking, Kubernetes, Terraform/OpenTofu
• Proactive & independent. You take initiative, thrive in dynamic environments, and enjoy turning ambiguity into action.
• Goal-oriented. You’re motivated to understand our challenges and translate them into smart, scalable solutions.
• Great communicator. You’re confident in both written and spoken English (Dutch is a bonus), and comfortable working across teams and stakeholders.
