Job summary

Michael Bailey Associates GmbH is seeking a Senior Azure Data Platform Engineer for a leading financial institution in the Utrecht region. You will design, manage and improve Azure data platform infrastructure to enable reliable data processing and regulatory reporting.

In a highly regulated banking environment, you will collaborate with Data Engineers to ensure platform stability, security and scalability, enabling liquidity reporting and compliance.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a cloud/data platform engineer in Azure environments.
• Strong hands-on experience with Azure services and data platforms.
• Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, ARM or Bicep) and CI/CD pipelines.
• Knowledge of banking security standards, access control and data governance.
• Experience supporting data platforms in regulated environments.

Job description

For a leading financial institution in the Utrecht region, we are looking for a Senior Azure Data Platform Engineer who will play a key role in designing, managing and improving the infrastructure that enables reliable data processing and regulatory reporting.

You will work in a highly regulated banking environment where availability, security, scalability and operational excellence are essential. Together with Data Engineers, you will ensure that data platforms are stable, performant and ready to support critical financial processes such as liquidity reporting and regulatory compliance.

This role focuses strongly on the platform and infrastructure side of data engineering. You will not primarily build ETL solutions yourself, but enable Data Engineers by providing a reliable Azure data platform, automation, security and operational capabilities.

What will you do?

• Design, build and maintain scalable Azure data platform components;
• Manage and optimize Azure services supporting enterprise data processing;
• Support Azure Data Factory, Azure Databricks and Azure Synapse environments from an infrastructure perspective;
• Ensure availability, performance and reliability of data platforms;
• Troubleshoot platform-related issues and improve operational stability;
• Support the evolution from legacy data solutions towards modern cloud-based platforms.

Collaboration with Data Engineering Teams

• Work closely with Data Engineers responsible for ETL pipelines and data transformations;
• Provide the technical foundation needed for reliable data processing;
• Support deployment, configuration and lifecycle management of data workloads;
• Improve development, testing and deployment processes for data solutions;
• Help teams adopt standardized ways of working.
• Implement Infrastructure-as-Code solutions using tools such as Terraform or ARM/Bicep;
• Automate provisioning, configuration and operational processes;
• Support CI/CD pipelines for data platform components;
• Improve monitoring, logging and alerting capabilities;
• Contribute to platform engineering standards and best practices.

Security, Governance & Compliance

• Ensure Azure environments comply with banking security standards;
• Implement access control, identity management and security policies;
• Support data governance, lineage and audit requirements;
• Contribute to compliance with regulatory frameworks such as BCBS 239 principles;
• Ensure environments are secure, traceable and operationally controlled.

Platform Optimization

• Improve scalability and performance of Azure data services;
• Support capacity management and cost optimization;
• Analyze platform bottlenecks and implement improvements;
• Maintain technical documentation and operational procedures.

What do you bring?

Must-have experience

• Proven experience as an Azure Cloud Engineer, Platform Engineer, Infrastructure Engineer or Data Platform Engineer;
• Strong hands-on experience with Azure environments;
• Experience managing cloud infrastructure supporting data platforms;
• Experience with:
• Azure networking and security concepts;
• Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, ARM or Bicep);
• Strong understanding of CI/CD, automation and operational processes.

Nice-to-have experience

• Knowledge of ETL processes and data engineering concepts;
• Experience working with Spark/Databricks environments;
• Familiarity with data governance, lineage and quality frameworks;
• Experience within banking, finance or other regulated environments.
