Job summary

Wlgroup in The Hague, Netherlands, seeks an Infrastructure-as-a-Service engineer for a multinational defence hosting service. You will manage day-to-day hosting operations, virtualisation, storage and the physical data centre.

You will work with senior technicians across design, engineering, implementation, operation and integration, maintaining VM, SAN/NAS, and security. Strong English and documentation skills are essential.

Qualifications

• MSc in a related subject with five years’ experience.
• Deep data-centre knowledge: servers, storage, virtualization and backup.
• Hands-on data-centre mgmt on VMware vSphere 7+; VMware Cloud Foundation knowledge.
• SAN/NAS fundamentals: TCP/IP, Fibre Channel, iSCSI.
• Active Directory, Windows Server and Red Hat Linux.
• IT asset/configuration management and ITIL practices.
• Automation with Ansible or VMware Aria.
• Strong IT security knowledge.
• Clear English and good documentation.

Responsibilities

• Day-to-day operation and maintenance of hosting services.
• Support senior technicians, engineers and service delivery managers.
• Administering and maintaining the virtual infrastructure and platform
• Installing, managing and running the common user services.
• Walk the data centre: daily hardware checks and part replacement.
• Update topology diagrams and configuration databases when kit changes.
• Troubleshoot in the data centre and document work.
• Advise on lifecycle of capabilities and monitor service levels.
• Write operating procedures and instructions for the service.

Job description

Infrastructure engineering where the data centre is down the corridor, not in another country's cloud region.

You would be the infrastructure-as-a-service engineer for a multinational defence hosting service in The Hague, Netherlands — virtualisation, storage, backup and the physical data centre that carries them, across the whole life of the service.

What you would be doing

• Day-to-day operation and maintenance of the hosting services
• Supporting the senior technicians, engineers and service delivery managers across design, engineering, implementation, operation and integration
• Administering and maintaining the virtual infrastructure, and system administration on the platforms you are given
• Installing, managing and running the common user services carried over the networks
• Walking the data centre: daily physical checks of hardware, replacing failing parts before they take something with them
• Keeping the change process honest — topology diagrams and the configuration database updated whenever kit goes in or comes out
• Troubleshooting in the data centre, and keeping a proper record of the work
• Advising on the whole life of the capabilities and services, and watching the service levels closely
• Writing the operating procedures and instructions the service runs on

What you would bring

• An MSc in a related subject with five years of related experience, or a BSc with seven
• Real depth in data-centre concepts, technologies and standards: servers, storage, virtualisation, and backup and restore of virtual environments
• Hands-on data-centre management on VMware vSphere 7 or later, with blade and rack-mount servers; knowledge of VMware Cloud Foundation
• SAN and NAS fundamentals — TCP/IP, Fibre Channel, FCoE, iSCSI, WWN, LIFs — against SAN, unified and NAS storage
• Installing, monitoring and maintaining data-centre equipment, including cabling and the physical infrastructure around it
• Active Directory, Windows Server and Red Hat Linux
• IT asset and configuration management, and sound ITIL practice
• Automation with tools such as VMware Aria or Ansible
• Sound practical knowledge of IT security
• Documentation you would not mind someone else inheriting, and clear English

Nice to have

• Virtualisation certification such as VCP, a data-centre certification, or CompTIA Server+, Network+ or CCNA
• Experience inside a service-provisioning organisation
