Job summary

South Mississippi Mental Health Center seeks a Children’s Community Support Specialist to directly support children and youth facing mental health challenges, helping them access community resources and therapeutic supports. Qualifications

  • Eligible for Community Support Specialist certification through the Mississippi Department of Mental Health.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct one-on-one behavioral interventions to teach communication, social, academic, and daily living skills and reduce problematic behaviors.
  • Collaborate with family and serve as a liaison between community, local school districts and outpatient treatment teams to provide treatment.
  • Participate in outreach activities to promote children mental, emotional, and social well-being programs.
  • Learn, understand, and teach evidence-based curriculums: Youth Mental Health First Aid and Teen Mental Health First Aid to youth, families, and community members.
  • Facilitate and assist in developing youth peer counseling programs throughout Region XVI.
  • Attend staffings on a regular basis throughout Jackson County, discuss appropriate cases with clinicians and provide consultation/referrals on cases within the county.

Children's Community Support Specialist

Position Summary The Children’s Community Support Specialist is a role focused on providing direct, compassionate support to children and youth experiencing mental health challenges, helping them access and benefit from community resources, services, and therapeutic supports.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Provide direct one-on-one behavioral interventions to teach communication, social, academic, and daily living skills and reduce problematic behaviors home, community, and school settings to children with mental, emotional, and social well-being challenges.
  • Collaborate with family and serve as a liaison between community, local school districts and outpatient treatment teams to provide treatment.
  • Participate in outreach activities to promote children mental, emotional, and social well-being programs throughout Jackson County.
  • Learn, understand, and teach evidence-based curriculums: Youth Mental Health First Aid and Teen Mental Health First Aid to youth, families, and community members.
  • Facilitate and assist in developing youth peer counseling programs throughout Region XVI.
  • Attend staffings on a regular basis throughout Jackson County, discuss appropriate cases with clinicians and provide consultation/referrals on cases within the county.
  • Always maintain client confidentiality.
  • Provide community support services in compliance with DMH standards.
  • Maintain case record documentation, complete and submit service logs according to the agency policy.
  • Attend and participate appropriately in clinical staffing.
  • Respond to clients’ needs in an appropriate and timely manner.
  • Demonstrate appropriate interactions with coworkers that promote a pleasant work environment.
  • Participate in interagency collaboration for the provision of client services when assigned.
  • Complete additional job duties assigned by supervisor.
Required Skills, Knowledge And Abilities
  • Valid driver’s license and auto liability insurance.
  • Ability to transport clients in private vehicles when necessary.
Education and Qualification Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in behavioral science or related field.
  • Eligible for Community Support Specialist certification through the Mississippi Department of Mental Health.
Preferred
  • Previous experience in a mental health setting.
  • Previous experience working with an SMI/SED in a treatment setting with working knowledge of the DSM.
  • Current BLS/CPR and MANDT/CPI certifications.
