Job summary

Greenpeace International is seeking a Chief Engineer (STCW A-III/2, unlimited) to join our team for the build of a 75m sailing vessel in Vigo, starting October 2026. The vessel will feature dual-fuel engines, fuel cells, battery energy storage, solar, and a Dutch flag with DNV class status.

You will oversee engine plant operation, supervise staff, maintain logs, ensure MARPOL compliance, and coordinate with shipyard and technical management to support timely delivery and ongoing campaigns.

Qualifications

• Valid STCW certificates for a Chief Engineer (STCW A-III/2, unlimited).
• Experience with methanol / LFL fuel and IGF Code certification is desirable.
• Experience in shipyard takeovers and vessel handover processes is desirable.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse crew.
• Commitment to Greenpeace values and environmental stewardship.

Responsibilities

• Monitor vessel construction in the Vigo shipyard and coordinate with supervision teams.
• Attend progress meetings with shipyard, site and remote teams and assist in system familiarity.
• Ensure safe operation and maintenance of engine plant and electrical equipment aboard.
• Maintain MARPOL compliance, keep engine logs, and provide monthly reports to management.
• Supervise engine staff, assign duties, and implement maintenance plans for the new build.
• Provide written assessments to the Master and Technical Manager on equipment status and priorities.
