Job summary

Axual in the Netherlands seeks a Backend (Full-Stack) Software Engineer to build high‑performance real‑time data platforms. You’ll design scalable features and own parts of our modern infrastructure, collaborating across teams to deliver reliable software.

You’ll work with Java, Kafka, Docker, and Kubernetes, advocate good software practices, and help customers succeed while shaping the product with an ownership mindset in a hybrid setup at our Utrecht HQ.

Qualifications

• 3+ years experience with Java in a professional environment.
• Deep understanding of microservices architecture and containerization.
• Hands-on experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
• Familiarity with Git, Maven, and CI/CD practices.
• Strong product mindset and ownership.

Responsibilities

• Design and build features that scale, are secure, and easy to use.
• Work with Java to Kafka and Docker in real projects.
• Contribute to Kafka-related projects, Helm charts, and Terraform/provider work.
• Write clean, testable, maintainable code for real-time data platforms.

Your Role at Axual

As a Backend (Full-Stack) Software Engineer, you’ll:

• Design and build features that make our solutions scalable, secure, and easy to use
• Work with modern open‑source tools, from Java to Kafka and Docker
• Contribute to a wide range of real projects: Kafka‑related projects, Helm charts, and our Terraform provider
• Write clean, testable, and maintainable code that powers real‑time data platforms
• Collaborate in a cross‑functional, agile team where ideas matter and ownership is key
• Support our customers and share your knowledge with colleagues and the wider tech community

What You Bring

• 3+ years experience with Java in a professional environment (preferably enterprise)
• Deep understanding of microservices architecture and containerization
• Hands‑on experience with Docker and Kubernetes
• Familiarity with Git, Maven, and CI/CD practices
• A strong product mindset - proud of what you build and care about the “why” behind it

Bonus Points For:

• Experience with Apache Kafka or other streaming/messaging systems
• Experience with Kafka Connect we build and maintain Connect plugins
• Working knowledge of Helm Charts
• Effective use of AI coding tools like Claude Code
