Job summary

Heerema Marine Contractors in Leiden seeks an Automation Engineer DET to bridge Engineering and IT & Digital. You translate engineering needs into scalable automation solutions, design reusable Python modules, and ensure alignment with Heerema’s digital strategy and standards.

You will guide offshore-ready tools, review designs with developers, and maintain tested, reliable code. The role focuses on enabling citizen developers, reducing duplicate work, and delivering tangible, future-proof

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Engineering or Computer Science is required.
• Proficient in Python with the ability to build packages/frameworks.
• Knowledge of C++ is a plus and beneficial for integration.
• Affinity for engineering challenges and automation.
• Ability to enable others and promote better digital skills.
• Familiarity with concepts like RAG or Knowledge Graphs is a plus.
• Proactive builder energy and strong teamwork in a small, high-impact team.
• Fluent in written and spoken English.

Responsibilities

• Engineer Enablement: supporting citizen developers with advice, reviews, docs, examples and reusable components.
• Hands-on Development: building and refining automation tools; turn defined problems into working solutions.
• Building Modules: creating Python packages that fit into the wider ecosystem with clean, reusable code.
• Drive momentum: own automation projects from inception to completion.
• Break down complex physics or logistical problems into clean atomic functions.
• Robust Engineering: write code with tests, validation, and documentation; offshore reliability.
