The Media and Communication department of theErasmus School of History, Culture and Communication is looking for an innovative and inspiring Assistant Professor in Media and Communication, on a Research Profile with 60% teaching and 40% research. They will be contributing to our high-quality education in BSc and MA levels and conduct innovative research in the field of media and communication. We are particularly looking for a candidate with knowledge and research expertise in the areas of media consumption, audience behaviour, brand communication and/or social media/digital marketing. Knowledge on quantitative methods and digital research methods is considered an advantage.

Job requirements

• A PhD in one of the social sciences, preferably in the field of media and communication, and ranks among the 10-20% of his or her peer group;
• A strong research track record, including publications in international refereed journals;
• Expert knowledge in the field of communication science, media studies with a focus on media consumption, audience behaviour, brand communication and/or social media/digital marketing, and the ability to make a substantial contribution to the development of introductory and specialization courses in this field;
• A broad knowledge and mastery of common research methods in media and communication. Knowledgeofquantitative/digital methods is considered an advantage;
• The potential to generate research funds from national and international funding agencies and to supervise junior researchers and PhD students;
• Prior teaching experience and the proven ability to inspire students from undergraduate to postgraduate levels, apparent from positive assessments by students and peers;
• The ability and willingness to teach a wide range of topics in the field of media and communication and to develop new courses;
• Excellent proficiency in spoken and written English. Non-English speakers have to meet the C1-standards of the Common European Framework (CEF). International applicants are expected to acquire a passive understanding of the Dutch language within two years;
• Strong team-playing, organizational and communication skills;
• Experience in international academic settings;
• A willingness to develop knowledge and skills in various disciplines.

The starting date of this position is 1 January 2026. You will be based at the Woudestein Campus inthe Department of Media and Communicationin the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC). This position is 0.8 - 1 FTE. The salary is dependent on your experience and knowledge and ranges from a minimum of € 4.925 (Salary scale 11) to a maximum of € 7.573 gross per month (Salary scale 12) on a full time basis, in accordance with the CAO-NU. The duration of the contract is 18 months with possible conversion to a permanent position upon good performance.

Department

The Media and Communication Department is a dynamic, internationally oriented department within the ESHCC. The department offers five degree programmes: the International Bachelor’s programme in Communication and Media (IBCoM), three international Master’s programmes in Media Studies (Media & Business, Media & Creative Industries, Media, Digitalisation & Society) and one Dutch-language programme Media & Journalistiek and the Research Master's in Sociology of Culture, Media and the Arts. The department's vibrant research community is embedded in Derius. We accommodate and actively support individual grant applications (NWO Talent VENI-VIDI-VICI, ERC) and participate in and coördinatie large collaborative grants (HEU a.o.).

The Selection Committee will invite a small number of candidates for an interview. The selection procedure will consist of two rounds of interviews.
