Job description

Wat ga je doen?

As an Assistant Professor on the CIMM tenure track, you will establish and lead an innovative, independent and sustainable research programme in infectious diseases, immunology or microbiology. Your programme may focus on acute infections and/or post-acute infection syndromes, should complement and strengthen CIMM's portfolio, and may be fundamental, translational or combine both approaches. Clinical research and structural clinical duties are outside the scope of this position. The indicative allocation of duties is 80% research, 10% teaching and 10% academic leadership, management, outreach and societal engagement.

  • Define and deliver an ambitious research strategy, covering the full research cycle from formulating questions and designing studies to translating findings into scientific and societal impact;
  • Build national and international collaborations and strengthen your international scientific visibility;
  • Obtain competitive external funding as principal investigator or co-principal investigator and publish rigorous, impactful research;
  • Recruit, supervise and mentor PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, research staff and students;
  • Contribute to teaching, academic leadership, team science, Open Science, knowledge sharing, societal engagement and CIMM's collaborative research culture.

Wat neem je mee?

You are a collaborative and ambitious researcher who is ready to take the next step towards independent research leadership. You bring:

  • A PhD in infectious diseases, immunology, microbiology or a closely related biomedical, medical or life-sciences field, followed by relevant postdoctoral research experience;
  • A strong scientific track record appropriate to your career stage, a clear and original research vision and evidence of increasing scientific independence;
  • High-quality peer-reviewed publications demonstrating substantial intellectual contributions, together with experience in competitive grant applications and the potential to build an externally funded research programme;
  • Experience in supervising and mentoring junior researchers and a commitment to high-quality education; a Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) is welcome but not required at the time of appointment;
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, excellent spoken and written English and the ability to contribute to a collaborative, inclusive and safe research environment.

International research experience and an established collaborative network are considered assets.

Wat bieden we jou?

The tenure track has a duration of five years. It includes annual developmental evaluations, an advisory midpoint review after approximately 18 months and a final tenure evaluation at the end of the third year. The midpoint review is intended to assess progress and identify support needs; it is not a formal go/no-go decision. Successful completion of the tenure-track trajectory leads to a permanent appointment as Assistant Professor.

The final decision is based on a holistic assessment of scientific quality, independence, publications, external funding, supervision, leadership, teaching and contribution to CIMM. The assessment follows DORA and Recognition & Rewards principles: no single indicator or journal-based metric is used in isolation. The detailed tenure-track agreement will be discussed with the successful candidate before appointment.

  • A full-time, five-year tenure-track appointment at Amsterdam UMC (36 hours per week);
  • A salary in scale 12 of the Cao UMC: €6,911 to €7,684 gross per month, depending on education and experience and based on full-time employment. The salary will increase by 3.5% on 1 May 2027;
  • An 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus;
  • 194.4 hours of annual leave for full-time employment, with the option to save additional leave;
  • A tenure-track coach, leadership-development opportunities, career guidance and support with grant development;
  • Access to Amsterdam UMC research infrastructure and core facilities and integration into departmental and institutional research networks;
  • 100% reimbursement of public transport costs. For walking, cycling, car or motorcycle travel, a mileage allowance of €0.21 per kilometre applies; for car and motorcycle travel this is capped at 40 kilometres one way;
  • A bicycle scheme of up to €1,500 once every three years;
  • Pension accrual with ABP, with Amsterdam UMC paying the majority of the pension contribution.
