Job summary

Qualifications

The Role

As a Water Engineer, you are expected to work on and deliver civil, and water related studies and engineering projects. Typical tasks include hydrology and hydraulic analysis and modelling, stormwater drainage and flood mitigation design, water resources analysis and design, erosion and sedimentation analysis and modelling, erosion and sedimentation control plans, river basin management plan, water quality analysis and modelling, design of water treatment plant and distribution supply infrastructures, etc. Knowledge in related fields like agricultural irrigation and drainage, coastal engineering, sewerage treatment and pipelines, earthworks and road design, geographical information systema and building information system are added advantage.

Non-technical tasks of water engineers include authority and stakeholder engagements and approvals, preparation of report documentation, tender documents and drawings, design coordination and liaison within a multi-disciplinary team. Like any other engineering roles, water engineers are required to deliver their tasks to meet the projects requirements including quality standards, cost budget and project timelines. Soft skills like good communication, teamwork, leadership and management skills are highly sought after.

The Opportunity
  • Ability to work independently to carry out assigned tasks and deliver the required outputs in a timely manner, meeting project objectives, quality standards, deadlines and budget.
  • You will be responsible for your own performance and assist in the development of other more junior staffs through providing guidance, training, and feedback
  • You will design across project lifecycle from Master Plan and Feasibility Stages through Concept, Preliminary and Detailed Design and provide support to projects in construction
  • Typically, your projects may involve, Stormwater Drainage and Water Sensitive Urban Design, Flood Mitigation and Management, Integrated Water and River Basin Management, Water Resources Management, Water Demand Management, Water Quality and River Rehabilitation Works, Dam Engineering and Management, Erosion and Sedimentation, Agricultural Irrigation and Drainage, Hydrology and Hydraulics, Advection-Dispersion Modelling, Water Treatment and Supply, Coastal Engineering, Wastewater Treatment and Conveyance, utility design and coordination amongst others
  • Your work will involve carry out desktop assessments, analysis and studies, water and civil engineering planning, modelling and design, production of engineering drawings, bill of quantities and cost estimates, tender documents and specifications, preparation of technical documentations, participating in stakeholder engagement and authority meetings, authority approvals for water and civil infrastructure projects.
  • You will contribute to other operational tasks required for the civil, water and resources (CWR) team of Arup including but not limited to tender submissions, research and development initiatives, quality management and assurance initializes, etc.
  • You will be responsible for executing responsibilities as outlined in Arup's Quality Management System

Is this role right for you?
  • Recognised relevant tertiary qualifications in Civil Engineering.
  • Relevant industry experience in Civil Engineering with an experience in Water Resources Management and Integrated Water Management works is preferable
  • Emphasis on design experience for Flood Mitigation and Management, stormwater drainage design, WSUD and Utilities design within a consulting business environment.
  • Knowledge and experience of Major Infrastructure Projects including major urban developments, major water resource and supply developments, coastal and maritime, rail and aviation projects is beneficial.
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience delivering projects covering a range of masterplans and feasibility studies, pre-concept design, detailed design to site phase for a range of clients including Local Government Authorities and/or Private Developers.
  • Experience in the operation of software modelling and design tools such as DHI MIKE 11, MIKE 21, MIKE Hydro River, MIKE Plus, MIKE SHE, Infoworks ICM, Infoworks WS, EPANET, Water Gems, AutoCAD or similar. In addition, experience using Geographical Information System (GIS) such as ArcGIS, QGIS, Global Mapper or similar and Building Information Modelling (BIM) packages such as Autodesk Civil 3D, Revit, Infraworks, Navisworks, Autodesk Recap, Bentley Systems, etc would be an advantage
  • Membership of relevant professional institutions/professional peer bodies or significant credit towards eligibility for membership.
  • Proven working knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice, and guidelines - and related procedures including OH&S.
