Job summary

Carsem in Ipoh is seeking an SMT Process Engineer to lead readiness forNew Product Introductions and optimize SMT processes. You will validate processes, drive productivity, and collaborate with QA, Equipment, Planning, and NPI teams to ensure smooth launches.

The role requires 3–5 years in SMT process engineering, hands-on experience with screen printing, solder paste, and reflow soldering, and strong problem-solving ability to deliver robust manufacturing solutions.

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of SMT Process Engineering experience.
  • Experience in SMT manufacturing, PCB assembly, NPI, or electronics manufacturing is preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with screen printing, solder paste, and reflow soldering.

Responsibilities

  • Lead SMT process readiness for NPI from feasibility through production release.
  • Develop, optimize, and validate SMT processes to achieve yield, quality, throughput, and cycle time.
  • Evaluate new products, materials, and process changes for manufacturability and compatibility.
  • Support process validation and ramp-up activities for new products.
  • Establish and optimize SMT process parameters to improve capability and efficiency.
  • Conduct DOE and process characterization to validate parameters.
  • Monitor performance and implement corrective actions for variation.
  • Drive continuous improvement for productivity, cost reduction, and robustness.
  • Provide technical troubleshooting to ensure production stability.

Job description

Key Responsibilities

1. SMT Process & NPI


  • Lead SMT process readiness for New Product Introduction (NPI) from feasibility assessment through process qualification and production release.


  • Develop, optimize, and validate SMT processes, including screen printing and reflow soldering, to achieve targeted yield, quality, throughput, and cycle time.


  • Evaluate new products, materials, components, and process changes to ensure manufacturability and process compatibility.


  • Support process validation and production ramp-up activities for new products.



2. Process Development & Optimization


  • Establish and optimize SMT process parameters to improve process capability, product quality, and manufacturing efficiency.


  • Conduct Design of Experiments (DOE) and process characterization to validate process parameters and identify opportunities for improvement.


  • Monitor process performance and implement corrective actions to address process variation and production issues.


  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focusing on productivity, cost reduction, process robustness, and manufacturing excellence.



3. Problem Solving & Yield Improvement


  • Conduct root cause analysis for process defects, yield losses, and production deviations using structured problem-solving methodologies.


  • Develop and implement corrective and preventive actions to prevent recurrence of process-related issues.


  • Analyse process data and identify trends or potential risks that may impact product quality and production performance.


  • Provide technical troubleshooting support to ensure production stability and process capability.



4. Equipment & Tooling


  • Support SMT equipment installation, setup, qualification, and buy-off activities.


  • Ensure equipment, tooling, and process parameters are compatible with product designs and customer requirements.


  • Work closely with Equipment Engineering to resolve equipment-related process issues and improve equipment performance.



5. Cross-Functional Collaboration


  • Work closely with Process Engineering, Quality Assurance, Equipment Engineering, Planning, Manufacturing, and NPI Program Management to ensure successful product launches.


  • Participate in NPI and production review meetings to identify technical risks, project gaps, and mitigation actions.


  • Provide technical input and recommendations to support manufacturing and business decisions.



6. Manufacturing Documentation


  • Develop, review, and maintain manufacturing process documentation, including:


    • SOPs


    • Work Instructions


    • Process Flow Charts


    • PFMEA


    • Control Plans


    • Process specifications



  • Ensure process documentation is updated and aligned with approved manufacturing processes and quality requirements.



7. Manufacturing Performance & Continuous Improvement


  • Monitor and analyse key manufacturing KPIs, including First Pass Yield (FPY), OEE, UPH, scrap rate, cycle time, and equipment downtime.


  • Identify improvement opportunities and implement initiatives to enhance productivity, quality, and process efficiency.


  • Support cost reduction and waste elimination initiatives within SMT manufacturing.


  • Ensure SMT processes comply with internal quality standards and customer requirements.



Qualifications & Requirements


  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.




  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in SMT Process Engineering or a similar manufacturing engineering role.


  • Experience in SMT manufacturing, PCB assembly, NPI, process development, or electronics manufacturing is preferred.


  • Hands-on experience with screen printing, solder paste, reflow soldering, and SMT process optimization would be an advantage.



Technical & Professional Knowledge


  • Strong knowledge of SMT processes and manufacturing principles.


  • Knowledge of DOE, PFMEA, process validation, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement methodologies.


  • Understanding of process capability, yield improvement, and manufacturing KPIs.


  • Good risk management and problem-solving skills.


  • Strong cross-functional collaboration and stakeholder management skills.


  • Good communication and presentation skills.


  • Ability to analyse data and make practical, data-driven recommendations.


  • Proactive, hands-on, and able to work effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
