We are seeking a highly capable and proactive Senior Project Controller to support the governance, monitoring, and financial steering of major capital investment projects at our Kulim site. The role requires a strongly hands-on approach, with the ability to move seamlessly between detailed transactional analysis and management-level conclusions.
The role focuses on providing transparency on project performance, identifying risks and deviations, supporting forecasting activities, and ensuring reliable project reporting. Acting as a trusted business partner to project teams and management, the Senior Project Controller contributes to informed decision making by delivering timely analysis, insights, and recommendations.
The successful candidate combines strong project controlling expertise with analytical thinking, business acumen, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced project environment.
Key Responsibilities
1 Project Controlling & Governance
- Support the implementation and continuous improvement of the project controlling framework.
- Ensure compliance with established governance standards, reporting requirements, and project controls processes.
- Maintain transparency on project performance across scope, cost, schedule, resources, and risks.
- Partner with project teams to ensure consistency and accuracy of project information.
2 Forecasting & Performance Analysis
- Prepare and maintain project forecasts, financial models, and performance analyses.
- Develop insight into key project drivers and support predictive project controlling activities.
- Identify emerging risks, trends, and potential deviations from plan.
- Conduct scenario analyses and support management decision-making through fact-based recommendations.
- Develop and continuously challenge Estimate-at-Completion (EAC) and forward-looking project forecasts based on actuals, commitments, project progress and remaining risks.
3. Cost & Schedule Control
- Analyze variances and identify root causes of deviations.
- Track corrective actions and follow up on implementation progress.
- Support the continuous improvement of planning and forecasting accuracy.
- Maintain a clear and traceable link between the approved Business Case, project budget, commitments, purchase orders, actual spend and latest forecast.
- Identify deviations from approved Business Case assumptions at an early stage and assess their financial impact.
- Ensure changes in scope, timing, quantities or commercial assumptions are transparently reflected and escalated.
- Analyze purchase requisitions, purchase orders, commitments and expected future spend to identify cost exposure before it reaches the P&L or fixed asset accounting.
4. Reporting & Tools
- Prepare regular project reporting packages, dashboards, and KPI analyses.
- Support the development and enhancement of project controlling tools and reporting solutions.
- Maintain and improve reporting processes using available systems and tools such as Excel, Power BI, SAP, or other project control platforms.
- Contribute to the automation and standardization of controlling processes
5. Management Support
- Prepare management presentations and reporting materials.
- Provide clear analysis of project performance, risks, and opportunities.
- Support Steering Committee and management reviews with accurate and actionable information.
- Escalate significant deviations and risks through the established governance channels.
6. Risk & Opportunity Management
- Support the project risk and opportunity management process.
- Assess and quantify financial impacts of identified risks and opportunities.
- Track mitigation measures and follow up with responsible stakeholders.
- Promote proactive identification and management of project risks.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Several years of experience in project controlling, project finance, CAPEX controlling, or related functions.
- Strong hands-on experience with SAP, ideally SAP ECC and/or S/4HANA, including CAPEX, purchase requisitions, purchase orders, commitments, actual costs and project-related cost tracking.
- Ability to independently extract, reconcile and analyze SAP data and connect it with approved business case assumptions and project forecasts.
- Strong understanding of project economics, budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
- Experience working with large-scale investment or industrial projects is preferred.
- Knowledge of project management and project control methodologies.
- Advanced Excel skills and experience with reporting and data visualization tools such as Power BI
- Strong analytical modelling capabilities, including advanced Excel skills; Power BI experience is an advantage.
- Strong business and financial acumen.
- Distinguish material issues from noise and focus management attention on the topics that can materially impact cost, timing, cash or project economics.
