Senior Database Administrator Sybase ASE-IQ

As a Senior Sybase ASE/IQ Database Administrator, you will be a part of a growing international team based in Kuala Lumpur Center. We are seeking candidates with a wide range of expertise and skills in Sybase ASE and IQ database support such as day‑to‑day administration, performance tuning, monitoring, backup/restore and SQL programming know‑how. You will mentor other database administrators and share your expertise within a large database team.

Key Activities

• Database Administration support with main focus on Sybase ASE and IQ databases.
• Database Maintenance, housekeeping, troubleshooting.
• Identify and resolve database performance issues, including tuning SQL queries, optimizing indexing, and implementing necessary database changes.
• Incident, problem and change management of database‑related incidents and problems, in collaboration with other technical teams.
• Provide operational support, including capacity planning, system performance analysis, and resource utilization monitoring.
• Develop and maintain documentation related to database administration procedures, configurations, and troubleshooting steps.
• Installation, configuration and lifecycle migrations/upgrades and patch management.
• Conduct ongoing monitoring and proactive management of database systems to ensure high availability and performance.
• Support database backup and recovery activities, ensuring appropriate backup strategies and disaster recovery plans are in place.
• T‑SQL database programming.
• Unix/Linux, PHP, Python, shell scripting.
• Participate in an on‑call rotation schedule to ensure 24/7 availability and response to critical incidents.
• Implement and maintain Sybase ASE/IQ disaster recovery and high availability solutions.
• Ensure compliance with data protection regulations.

Formal Education

• Official acknowledged university / college qualifications.
• Certified corresponding post‑education or training in Sybase ASE/IQ database administration areas.

Qualifications / Skills

Sufficient and proven experience in PostgreSQL database administration in particular:

• At least 10 years of experience working in Sybase ASE/IQ database administration.
• Administration, backup/recovery and monitoring.
• Problem analysis, resolution and error debugging including skills in raising support requests with vendors.
• Database performance tuning (configuration related and application code tuning).
• Database installation and configuration including patching.
• Profound skills in Sybase Replication Server administration.
• Backup and recovery, cloning and duplication.
• Data transfer/extract features for Sybase ASE/IQ.
• Space management analysis and object reorganization.
• Database patching and migrations.
• Database user management (authorisation and authentication).
• Analysis of database performance reports.
• Advanced Unix/Linux shell scripting, PHP or Python programming skills.
• T‑SQL database programming.

Additional Preferred Skills (technical, methodology and business)

• Knowledge of another database technology: PostgreSQL, Cassandra, Redis Cache is a plus.
• Experience in software methodology, processes and quality assurance.
• Knowledge in the area of IT security.
• Profound interest in new technologies and self‑motivated troubleshooting.
